Weiss Schwarz Trial Deck Reviews: Fate/ Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works

Greetings! Railgunfan 75 back here with another Weiss Schwarz related post. Given the success of my two previous trial deck review, I thought it was time for me to do another such post. With the recent announcement of Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works (or UBW as I’ll refer to it from now on) being released for the  English game, I’m sure that many people are curious as to whether the set is actually any good and what it has to offer. I have invested in the Japanese release last month, so I thought I would share with you my thoughts on the set particularly the trial deck. I hope to do a full set review before the English release as well. So without any further delay, here are the cards in the trial deck! As I did in the other reviews, I won’t discuss the vanilla or generic cards of the deck. Finally all translations and images from http://www.heartofthecards.com.

Level 0

Shirou, A Normal Morning

(Master)   Trait 2: None

[A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, reveal the top card of your Library. If it’s a Level 0 or lower Character, Rest this. (Put the revealed card back where it was)

It’s nice to see an oversized level 0 in a trial deck. Sure this card has a fair chance of hitting a level 0 character, but you can just place it in the back row if it rests and you get a potential trigger check. Not a bad card really, Probably won’t see this in a lot of competitive decks but it is worth considering in my opinion.

Rin, Proof of Pact

(Gem)

[A] When this becomes Reversed, if the Level of the Battle Opponent of this is 0 or lower, you may Reverse that Character.
[S] [Rest this] Choose 1 of your Characters with “Archer” in name, and that Character gains +1500 Power and the following ability for the turn. “[A] If the Level of the Character Opposite this is lower than the Level of this, this cannot attack.”

Having a level 0 reverser in a trial deck is always a welcome addition to a trial deck. Since these cards are staples in most decks, having this adds some value to the trial deck. Level o reversers are always good but in addition this has a second ability which works well with Archer cards. This only downside is that to use the second ability, Rin would need to be in the back row. It is important to note that this card is necessary to activate resonance abilities of many of the cards in the booster set. Because of this fact, this card is a great addition to the trial deck as you get one of the essential cards for this set.

Saber, Joining the Holy Grail War

(Weapon)

[S] [Rest 2 of your Characters] Choose 1 of your Characters with either ::Master:: and/or ::Servant::, and that Character gains +1500 Power for the turn.
[S] BRAINSTORM [(1)] Flip over the top card of your Library and put it in the Waiting Room. Choose 1 of your Characters, and that Character gains +X Soul for the turn. X = the Level of the card put in the Waiting Room this way. (Climax cards are considered Level 0 for this effect)

This is really an interesting card. The first ability is a really nice power pump. 1500 power is a significant power boost in this case and can allow you to overcome a power chararcter. It isn’t too often that you receive a card with a Brainstorm ability in a trial deck. The brainstorm ability is an ok ability. The soul buff can be nice though in a competitive deck paying 1 stock to mill 1 card is not very efficient. It works fine in a trial deck since trial decks have a tendency to have an excess of stock and few options to pay out climaxes but in a competitive deck there are better options.

The remainder of the level zero cards are 3000 power vanillas and a 500 power assist to characters in front. The level zero lineup is quite solid, The cards I featured have some nice tech particularly in a trial deck. It’s not the best lvl 0 lineup I’ve seen but not the worst either.

Level 1

Saber, Hero of the Past

(Weapon)

[A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, this gains +1500 Power for the turn.
[A] When this attacks, if “Fateful Night” is in the Climax Zone, you may choose 1 of your other Characters and return it to your hand.

And because this card has a climax combo, here is the climax.

Fateful Night

[A] When this is placed from hand to the Climax Zone, choose up to 1 YELLOW card in your Waiting Room and put it in your Stock, and all your Characters gain +1 Soul for the turn.

I really like this card and this climax combo. The card is a 6000 on the turn it is played for zero cost. In addition the climax combo gives you a free stock and the option of a free encore of sorts. The ability to return a character to hand can be quite useful. This makes it easier to repeat cards with on play effects and lets you maintain hand size if your characters will die verses an overpowered enemy field. This is even better with the climax being a stock soul. These climaxes are really nice as they give you a free stock and help you compress. This is a good combo for competitive play.

Shirou, Friendly to Others

(Master)   Trait 2: None

[A] When you use the BACKUP of this, reveal the top card of your Library. If it’s a Character with either ::Master:: and/or ::Servant::, put it in your hand, and discard a card from your hand to the Waiting Room. (Otherwise put the card back where it was)
[S] [Counter] BACKUP 1500, Level 1 [(1) Discard this card from hand to the Waiting Room]

This is a really good counter card. For 1 stock you can back up for 1500 plus potential remove 1 damage from an attack. In addition this card lets you possibly hand fix on you opponents turn. These additional abilities make it well worth the one stock and the low power pump. This certainly could have some use in competitive play regardless of the build you run, more for utility than power boost. Certainly a nice card especially for a trial deck.

Archer, Bowman Wielding Two Blades

(Weapon)

[C] This cannot Side Attack

An oversized level 1 with a minimal downside. Sure side attacking at level 1 is useful, but with the character not costing anything to play, the penalty for losing the character is minimal. A solid card which could have some use in competitive play especially in Rin/Archer decks.

Shirou, Enhancing Magic

(Weapon)

[A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, choose 1 of your other Characters with either ::Master:: or ::Servant::, and that Character gains +1000 Power for the turn.

A very simple but useful card. Since most of the fate set is Master or Servant, this card can give a power buff on play to almost anything. Nothing unique about the card, but nothing wrong with it either. Could be a nice addition for those running yellow in their decks.

The remaining level 1s are 7000 vanilla cards, so nothing really to say about those. The level 1 lineup is really solid in this trial deck, there are many useful cards in the level 1 lineup with the ability to play pretty powerful level 1 characters. This is certainly not a weak point of this deck.

Level 2

Rin & Archer, For Victory

(Servant)

[A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, if you have 4 or more other Characters with either ::Master:: and/or ::Servant::, you may put the top card of your Library in your Stock.
[A] [(1)] At the start of the Encore Step, if you have no other Rested Characters in the Front Row, you may pay cost. If so, Rest this.

This TD exclusive is an ok but not great card. Needing a full field to summon this for one stock is a hefty cost to pay especially for something which really doesn’t have a super useful second ability. The 1 stock encore is nice but it requires the other slots to be empty or you characters to be reversed. Just too many conditions needed for this card to work. If this card had a way to gain power, it would be better.

Archer, Job of a Familiar

(Servant)

[C] ASSIST All your Characters in front of this gain +X Power. X = 500 times Level of that Character.
[A] [(2)] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, you may pay cost. If so, choose a Character in your Waiting Room and return it to your hand.

A pretty standard but good card. The ability to pay 2 stock and replace the card you just played is always nice. A staple in many sets, this type of card always has a use in a deck. This is a really nice addition to a trial deck.

Rin, Summoning Ritual

(Gem)

[C] For each of your other Characters with either ::Master:: and/or ::Servant::, this gains +500 Power.

This is a simple yet effective power house card. This type of card is included in many sets and it usually works really well. With the ability to consistently top 10000 power for one stock, this card is a really nice beater.

All your Characters gain +1500 Power and the following ability for the turn. “[C] This cannot be chosen as target of your Opponent’s effects.

The trial deck’s event card is a nice offensive event. A 1500 global boost on offense for 0 stock is nice. It does cost you 1 card from hand and can’t be used on defense but in the right deck it certainly could be useful. There are better events out there but this card works nicely in this deck.

The remaining level 2 is an 8500 vanilla. The level 2 lineup is a bit of a mixed bag. Most of cards are strong cards with the exception of the 2/2 8K Rin and Archer. Overall though the level 2 lineup has some useful cards in it and has some nice cards for competitive play.

Level  3

Rin, Gem Magician

[A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, you may put the top card of your Clock in the Waiting Room.
[A] When your other Character with either ::Master:: or ::Servant:: attacks, this gains +1000 Power for the turn.

This card is great for a trial deck and a nice compliment to a competitive deck. It is nice to have a healer included in a trial deck especially one that can attack at over 12000. Not the strongest level 3 you will find but one of the best included in a trial deck. This card is a great addition to Rin or Master centric decks as a solid healer.

The climax lineup is 2 gates, 2 DPS, and 4 stock soul climaxes. All three of these climax types are useful in complete decks. This is a great climax lineup and you can be set with climaxes by getting 2 trial decks.

Overall I was quite impressed with this trial deck. There is a nice strong power curve with many utility options at one’s disposal. The climax lineup is excellent and rare for a trial deck. There are many cards which would be useful in tournaments and the vanillas are kept to a minimum. I would say that this deck falls in to the top five list of useful trial decks. If you are new to the game or new to Fate- this trial deck is a great purchase. If you are looking to improve your pre existing Fate deck, I recommend this as well.

In some extra news, since the series of posts hasn’t garnered any interest, I will no longer be posting updates for my summer anime challenge. I had hoped that it would draw some interest and attention to the blog, but it did not. Instead I will focus on the things which people are reading including more weiss content and more anime reviews. So until next time, this is Railgunfan75 signing off.
