Weiss Schwarz Wednesdays: 1/27/2015 Haruhi Set Review

Greetings! Railgunfan75 here with this weeks installment of Weiss Schwarz Wednesdays! This week I had planned for you a deck profile to commemorate the release of the Haruhi set in English. However, I decided I would wait a week on this and instead give an a brief set review of the Haruhi set which is a first for this blog. The deck profile will come next week. For this set review I will be highlighting 12 cards- three for each color that highlight what the set is capable of. If a card combos with a climax or another card, they will be bundled together to show how the combo works. I will briefly discuss the merits and demerits of a card. In addition there may be some cards featured which will showcase a weakness a set has. Afterwords, I will give some brief thoughts on the set as a whole. So let’s begin shall we?

(All images and info are from ws-tcg.com)

Since I will be exploring the Haruhi booster only and the set is out in English, I will be using the English names here. I’ll start with the yellow cards first.

WSE_SY_W08_E002_RR

Santa Girl Haruhi and Kyon

Traits: Brigade Leader and SOS Brigade

【AUTO】 [(5)] This ability activates up to one time per turn. When this card’s battle opponent becomes 【REVERSE】, if the number of your other 《SOS Brigade》 characters is four or more, you may pay the cost. If you do, Stand this card.

【AUTO】 When this card is frontal attacked, look at the top card of your deck, and put it on the top of your deck or into your waiting room.

The yellow level 3 for set is quite an interesting card. The restand ability of this card can be quite useful to finish off games. However, the cost and conditions to do so are quite pricey. You not only need 5 stock but you also need a full field of SOS Brigade characters in order to use this ability. One of the sets quirks is that it has a LOT of different traits including key cards which are not of the SOS Brigade trait. Because of this, unless you build a deck with only SOS Brigade characters, you will likely not be able to pull this off. The stock cost is also very high as newer double attackers usually require less stock for such abilities. However, the second ability is quite good. The ability to possibly stop one damage in a era filled with cards with on reverse burn effects can be quite useful. This card as a whole is a decent card. With the right deck build it can be even better, but such a build denies you some of the sets best cards. This card is worth your consideration for the secondary effect at least.

Unseen Trust Haruhi and Kyon

Traits: Brigade Leader and SOS Brigade

【AUTO】 At the beginning of your encore step, if a card named “Haruhi Suzumiya’s Good News” is in your climax area, you may put this card into your memory. If you do, at the beginning of your next draw phase, choose a card named “Unseen Trust, Haruhi & Kyon” in your memory, put it on any position of your stage, and that character gets +3000 power until end of turn.

WSE_SY_W08_E023_CR

Haruhi Suzumiya’s Good News

【CONT】 All of your characters get +2 soul.

I usually am not a fan of +2 soul climax combos, but this is a really good combo. The 2 soul climax allows you to side attack a level 1 or 2 character for damage and on the subsequent turn, you get a level 1 card which can easily top 9000 power with assists. This card can get even bigger because of a couple other cards which will be featured later. In addition this combo lets you save your hand size for a turn by removing a character which can be defeated on your opponents turn. This effect also slows down decks which feature on reverse climax combos. The downside is that you do potentially expose yourself to more damage. This downside in my opinion is negligible and this card is worth running if you chose to run yellow.

WSE_SY_W08_E004_R

Mystery Transfer Student, Koizumi

Traits: Psychic Ability and SOS Brigade

【CONT】 Assist During your turn, all of your characters in front of this card get +1000 power.

【AUTO】 [Put a card from your hand into your waiting room] When your character’s trigger check reveals a climax, if that card’s trigger icon is , you may pay the cost. If you do, search your deck for up to one 《SOS Brigade》 character, reveal it to your opponent, put it into your hand, and shuffle your deck.

With this card, we are introduced to another tech which is included in the set. The second ability allows the player to gain an additional benefit of triggering a climax. Hand fixes are always a positive thing. Here we get a handfix in addition to potentially removing a character from play. Sure, this relies on triggering a wind climax which requires a bit of luck. Also the search requires a deck with a fair amount of SOS Brigade characters which are not every character in the set. The assist ability is an additional plus though it would be even better if power buffed on both turns. This is an solid card especially in the right build.

And now we move on to the green cards…

From Another Time, Mikuru and Mikuru (Adult)

Traits: Time and SOS Brigade

【AUTO】 When this card attacks, if a card named “Classified Information” is in your climax area, until the end of your opponent’s next turn, your opponent cannot play event cards from hand.

【AUTO】 When this card attacks, if a card named “Classified Information” is in your climax area, all of your characters get +1500 power until end of turn.

Classified Information

【CONT】 All of your characters get +1000 power and +1 soul. (: When this card triggers, you may put the top card of your deck into your stock.)

This climax combo gives us an example of anther of the set’s nuances. In the Haruhi set, there are plenty of abilities which have an effect on the opponents turn. In this case, the ability to prevent your opponent from using events on both turns. The ability to stop events such as anti damage counters can really disrupt an opponents game plan and ensure that your game plan has a higher chance of success. The 1500 global power boost is also another nice touch. For no cost, this is a really good climax combo.

WSE_SY_W08_E037_U

Cat Ears, Mikuru

Traits: Time and Animal

【CONT】 The character facing this card gets -1 soul.

【AUTO】 [(1)] When this card is placed on the stage from your hand, you may pay the cost. If you do, until the end of your opponent’s next turn, your opponent cannot play climax cards from hand.

The trend of influencing the opponent continues with this card. This ability combination can potentially be devastating to certain game plans including one of the endgame options for the Haruhi set. There are many sets which rely on climax combos at level 3 to execute their endgame that the inability to play climaxes can be devastating. This ability could very feasibly allow you to survive an additional turn and deal the final blow. The second -1 soul ability is another good ability. This is a really good card and another reason to consider green.

WSE_SY_W08_E029_R

Mikuru Asahina

Traits: Time and SOS Brigade

【AUTO】 [(2)] At the beginning of your encore step, you may pay the cost. If you do, choose one of your characters and this card, and put them into your memory. At the beginning of your next draw phase, put those characters from your memory on to separate positions of your stage, and those characters get +1000 power until end of turn.

Here we have another card which goes to memory and bounces back. This one however allows you to send a second character as well. Since it is at the start of the encore step, you can theoretically send a reversed character to memory and back on the next turn. This effectively encores 2 characters for 2 stock. This card also removes characters which could be reversed for advantage by your opponent. Another good card here.

Next up, here are the red cards.

WSE_SY_W08_E069_C

Trouble Girl Haruhi

Traits: Brigade Leader and Book

【AUTO】 When this card is placed on the stage from your hand or by a “Change” effect, you may put the top card of your clock into your waiting room. 【AUTO】 When this card attacks, if a card named “Someday in the Rain” is in your climax area, you may deal one damage to your opponent. (This damage may be canceled)

WSE_SY_W08_E075_CC

Someday in the Rain

【CONT】 All of your characters get +1000 power and +1 soul. (: When this card triggers, you may choose a character from your waiting room, and return it to your hand.)

These cards are also included in the trial deck as well, which is crazy. Healers are always a nice addition. Removing one damage can be the difference between life and death in the game of Weiss. Despite some newer sets, The comeback or gate climax is still one of the best in the game. Combine those two cards to form a burn combo. This is a great combo particularly for an older set. This is one of the signature combos of this set. A no cost burn climax combo is still good today. This combo is one of the best in the Haruhi set as it is it’s most effective means to end the game.

WSE_SY_W08_E054_R

Hot Springs Haruhi

Traits: Brigade Leader and SOS Brigade

【AUTO】 When this card becomes 【REVERSE】, if this card’s battle opponent is level 0 or lower, you may 【REVERSE】 that character. 【AUTO】 When this card becomes 【REVERSE】 in battle, choose one of your 《SOS Brigade》 characters, and that character gets +1500 power until end of turn.

Level 0 reversers are a staple in pretty much any set. However this card has a secondary ability which is really useful for multiple cards in the set. Another of this set’s characteristics is that the power curve on this set is relatively low especially in the English game. Because of this, any way to boost a character’s power is certainly welcome. Yes, this ability also targets only SOS Brigade characters (as does many other cards) but even if you can’t use the second ability, the reversing ability is always useful so you can run this in a deck with only a few SOS characters.

WSE_SY_W08_E051_RR

Xmas Party, Haruhi and Kyon

Traits: Brigade Leader and SOS Brigade

【CONT】 All of your other 《Brigade Leader》 characters get +1000 power.

The reason that I will discuss this card vs the “Usual” Haruhi card is that this card allows for a particular deck type, The Haruhi waifu deck. With a couple of exceptions, this card boosts all Haruhi characters by 1000 power. A global 1k boost is huge. Any trait based or character based deck needs a good assist to be sustainable and if you are wish to build a Haruhi deck, this is the assist of choice.

And finally, we have the blue cards.

WSE_SY_W08_E076_RR.png

Alien, Nagato & Asakura & Kimidori

Traits: Alien and Book

【CONT】 All of your other 《Alien》 characters get +500 power.

【ACT】 [(2) 【REST】 this card] Search your deck for up to one 《Alien》 character, reveal it to your opponent, put it into your hand, and shuffle your deck.

Nagato fans rejoice as this card make Nagato quite playable and this is easily one of the best cards of the set. Global supports and searchers are both essential for any deck. When you get a card which includes both, your deck is going to function effectively. The alien build is arguably  the most consistent build in the Haruhi set and this card is a key piece of the build. This card is a must play if you wish to build a Nagato centric deck.

WSE_SY_W08_E083_U

Swimsuit Haruhi & Nagato

Traits: Brigade Leader & Alien

【AUTO】 When this card is placed on the stage from your hand or by a “Change” effect, choose one of your other charcters, and that character gets the following ability until end of turn. “【AUTO】 When this card is put into your waiting room from the stage, you may return this card to its previous stage position as 【REST】.”

WSE_SY_W08_E091_C.png

Nagato Eating Watermelon

Traits: Alien & Watermelon

【AUTO】 Change [(1) Put this card into your waiting room] At the beginning of your encore step, if this card is 【REST】, you may pay the cost. If you do, choose a card named “Swimsuit Haruhi & Nagato” in your waiting room, and put it on the stage position this card was on.

We have another cool tech added to the set with this card- auto encore. I really like this ability and the possibilities that it allows for. In addition, the ability to bring out the level 1 early via a very cost effective change effect and you have a card with a lot of upsides to it. A nice beater at level 0 and at level 1 a card which can help you to maintain a defensive presence. A staple card in many decks, this combo is a great reason to consider blue in any build.

And now for the final card.

Prim and Proper NagatoWSE_SY_W08_E077_RR.png

Traits: Alien and Book

【AUTO】 [(1)] When this card is placed on the stage from your hand, you may pay the cost. If you do, this card gets the following ability until end of turn. “【AUTO】 When this card’s battle opponent becomes 【REVERSE】, you may put the top card of your clock into your waiting room.”

【AUTO】 When this card is placed on the stage from your hand, you may put all of your opponent’s characters into your opponent’s memory. If you do, put those characters on to separate positions of his or her stage.

The blue level 3 of the set is another interesting card. The theme of affecting your opponent returnes with this card which allows to rearrange your opponents field for free on play. This could be huge. Depending on the set you can get rid of an annoying assist, brainstormer, anti-heal, or anti salvage card. In addition, for 1 stock you can also heal after killing the back row character. Arguably the best card in this set, this card is playable in both alien and non alien centric decks.

This set while not the most competitive, is a lot of fun to play. There is a lot of a fun and interesting tech in this set. This set really can be seen as anti meta set in a way. There are options for stopping climax combos, event centric decks, on reverse effects and more. However, there are somethings which can hinder the set. There are a lot of traits and the set while it can beat up some things can have a hard time against newer sets with higher power numbers. If you are looking for a meta changing set, this is not it. However, if you are looking for a set which does a lot of cool and fun things than  pick this one up. Fun was what Haruhi was looking for wasn’t she?

So concludes my 1st set review. What did you think about the set or this review? Please leave a comment down below. I am happy to hear all comments.
