Greetings! Railgunfan75 here with another set review. This time we have the promo set- Ultimate Card Game Shiyoko! This is a limited release promo set featuring the mascot for the game for the game of Weiss Schwarz. The set comes with everything shown below including a playable deck.

IMG_0646          IMG_0647

All of the items included in the set are really nice. The deck box and sleeves are high quality, and the comic (even though I can’t read Japanese) looks adorable. In addition the outer box serves as a nice over-sized deck holder. The quality of the material is nice and it seems like the box will hold up nicely. You also have a regular paper playmat and the how to play guide (both in Japanese). It is important to note that the deck comes with one of four sp cards in every box. With a guaranteed signed card at a price tag of around 40 bucks, the set as a whole is a really nice investment as the deck box and sleeves alone can cost that for many sets.

And of course the set comes with a ready to play deck all with cards that had not been printed previously. I will briefly discuss each card in numeric order and give my overall thoughts on the deck. As usual all translations and images are taken from Below is a picture with the deck’s contents.I will include the number of copies of each card with the evaluations. So let’s begin!

And the promo card!

Festival Shiyoko      CGS/WS01-T01     2 Copies

Trait 1: カードゲーム (Card Game)
Trait 2: 鉢巻 (Hachimaki)

[A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, reveal the top card of your Library. If it’s a ::Card Game:: Character, put it in your hand and discard a card from your hand to the Waiting Room. (Otherwise put it back where it was)

[A] When this becomes Reversed, if the Level of the Battle Opponent of this is 0 or lower, you may Reverse that Character.

This card possesses two really nice card effects. Level 0 reversers are always nice to have in any deck. This ability in itself makes this card worthwhile. However, the first effect makes this card useful throughout the game. The effect allows you an easy way to hand fix and to discard excess climaxes from your hand. Also you can check to see to see if you need to brainstorm or not and /or what your first attack trigger will be. A really good card to start off the set.

Flower Viewing Shiyoko   CGS/WS01-T02    2  Copies

Trait 1: カードゲーム (Card Game)
Trait 2: None

[A] This ability activates up to once per turn. When you use an [S] ability, choose 1 of your Characters, and that Character gains +500 Power for the turn.
[S] BRAINSTORM [(1) Rest this] Flip over the top 4 cards of your Library and put them in the Waiting room. For each Climax card revealed this way, choose a ::Card Game:: Character in your Waiting Room and return it to your hand.

This is a good card. Any brainstorm effect is a welcome addition to any deck. The salvage brainstorm is still one of the best effects in the game. The second ability is not an amazing effect however. An additional 500 power won’t do much past level 0. The effect is not terrible but not amazing either. The brainstorm effect is the reason to play this card and it is a nice tool to have in this deck.

Unseen Frenemy   CGS/WS01-T03  4 copies

Trait 1: カードゲーム (Card Game)
Trait 2: 暗黒街 (South Town)

[C] This cannot Side Attack.

There is not much to say about this card. A 3500 beater which can’t side attack is present in many sets. This type of card just does work at level 0 in most decks. Overall a good card.

Merlion Shiyoko SG    CGS/WS01-T04    2 Copies

Trait 1: カードゲーム (Card Game)
Trait 2: 動物 (Animal)

[C] For each of your other ::Card Game:: Characters, this gains +500 Power.

This has become a very common card card type since it debuted in Love Live and the card type is really good for zero cost. The strength of these cards does depend a bit on the assists available in the set but a 6500 power card for zero cost is always a good card as many sets don’t have consistent answers for these type of cards. Another solid addition to the deck.

Shirokuro Runner Shiyoko     CGS/WS01-T05   4 Copies

Trait 1: カードゲーム (Card Game)
Trait 2: スポーツ (Sports)

A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, this gains +x Power for the turn. X = 500 times # of your ::Card Game:: Characters.

I am a bit torn when it comes to this type of card. It isn’t a bad card but not great in my opinion. A lot of people rave about this card type. It is a great 1 turn assassin but weak on defense. It will likely die after one turn which makes me rate this card a little lower than others would. It is not a bad card by any means, but I prefer cards like the previous one discussed.

Year of the Sheep Shiyoko    CGS/WS01-T06   2 Copies

Trait 1: カードゲーム (Card Game)
Trait 2: 和服 (Yukata)

[C] If you have 2 or more other ::Card Game:: Characters, this gains +1500 Power and “[A] ENCORE [Put the top card of your Library in your Clock]”.

Clock encore level 1 cards are a bit undervalued in my opinion. Yes there are games where taking the extra damage to sustain field is not the best choice but I have found in other sets such as Log Horizon that these type of cards really have more benefits then detriments. In this case you a 7500 power character before assists that will be tough to kill in the first place. And if it dies, you have an easy encore option. A very good card in my opinion.

Year of the Monkey Shiyoko   CGS/WS01-T07  3 Copies

Trait 1: カードゲーム (Card Game)
Trait 2: 和服 (Yukata)

[C] If you have 2 or more other ::Card Game:: Characters, this gains “[A]ENCORE [Discard a Character card from your hand to the Waiting Room]”.
[A] When this attacks, if the Level of the Battle Opponent of this is 3 or higher, this gains +6000 Power for the turn.

This card is a nice addition to this deck. A solid response to decks which rely on playing level 3 cards at level 2 (which is many decks these days). For one cost the ability to beat a level 3 card is a bargain. Also the hand encore option makes it a little more viable on defense. This card is not without it’s negatives however. I will concede that the base power is a bit weak and you will have to use the encore effect to keep it alive. That is a fairly sizable downside to this card. The card is certainly a playable card but not the best card in this deck by any means.

Schwarz Shiyoko      CGS/WS01-T08      2 Copies

Trait 1: カードゲーム (Card Game)
Trait 2: None

[A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, look at up to 3 cards from top of your Library, choose up to 1 of them and put it in your hand, and put the rest in the Waiting Room.
[A] [(1)] When this attacks, if “The Day It All Began” is in the Climax Zone, you may pay cost. If so, deal 1 Damage to your Opponent, and this gains +1500 Power until the next end of your Opponent’s turn. (Damage Cancel can occur)

I was really surprised when I read the translation for this card. This type of level 3 is a rare addition to a starter/promo set and really makes this deck as a whole considerably better. It is important to note that the search effect lets you add both events and climaxes to hand as well as characters. This makes the climax combo so much easier to execute. The combo itself is a solid combo as well. Burn combos are almost always effective (except against anti-burn) and this one is no exception here especially with the on attack condition. It is sad that there are only two copies of this card in the deck as it is a good card for finishing games. If you can pick up more copies of this card and add it to your deck then you would have a pretty effective way to end games.

Welcome Home     CGS/WS01-T09     2 Copies

Choose up to 2 Characters in your Waiting Room and return them to your hand, and discard a card from your hand to the Waiting Room.

A nice event which lets you hand fix and set up your endgame. Not much to say here except we have a good event here. The level 3’s ability to add events to hand makes this more consistent. A good card overall.

The Day It All Began    CGS/WS01-T10        4 Copies

Triggers: Salvage

[C] All your Characters gain +1000 Power and +1 Soul.

The deck includes 4 copies of arguably the best climax trigger in the game. In addition this is the climax which combos with the level 3 red card.  Enough said. Great card.

Life-Saving Procedure   CGS/WS01-T11      2 Copies

Triggers: 2 Soul

[A] When this is placed from hand to the Climax Zone, choose up to 1 RED card in your Waiting Room and put it in your Stock, and all your Characters gain +1 Soul for the turn.

This climax type is a bit underrated in my opinion. This climax allows you to improve compression and generate 4 stock a turn. The deck is mostly red so this card has many options to put in stock. It is a nice card.

“First Blood” Angry Shiyoko   CGS/WS01-T12   2 Copies

Trait 1: カードゲーム (Card Game)
Trait 2: 武器 (Weapon)

[A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, you may put the top 3 cards of your Library in the Waiting Room.
[A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, choose 1 of your other ::Card Game:: Characters, and that Character gains +1000 Power for the turn.

A very nice utility card at all levels. The no cost mill 3 ability could be a game saver if you know you are out of climaxes in your deck. The effect is optional so if you know there are climaxes remaining you can choose not to do this. This reduces the risk considerably. The first effect makes for a great card and the second effect makes it even better. An additional 1000 power can really make a difference in a critical situation. A very good card.

Vocalist Shiyoko   CGS/WS01-T13    4 copies

Trait 1: カードゲーム (Card Game)
Trait 2: 音楽 (Music)

[C] All your other :Card Game:: Characters gain +500 Power.
[S] [Rest this] Choose 1 of your ::Card Game:: Characters, and that Character gains +500 Power for the turn.

Global assists are always good cards to have. The global assist card makes this card a worthwhile inclusion. The second startup ability is really lackluster however. While this does combo with one of the previous cards, if you don’t have the brainstorm card on the field, mall it does is boost a card 500 power. Once the game advances past level 1 an additional 500 power really won’t do much. The assist effect makes it worth playing but I just wish the secondary effect was a little better.

Revolutionary Child of the Card Game Industry Shiyoko  CGS/WS01-T14   2 Copies

Trait 1: カードゲーム (Card Game)
Trait 2: None

[A] [(1) Put the top card of your Library in your Clock] When this is placed from the Stage to the Waiting Room, you may pay cost. If so, search your Library for up to 1 Level 1 or lower Character, reveal it, put it in your hand, and shuffle your Library.

This search effect is a good effect. Effectively you are simply clocking yourself 1 damage when it dies to add any level 1 or lower card to your hand. Any search effects are good, this one lets you build the stock to pay the cost and then activate the effect. This card is weak to cards which send cards to stock, clock or top deck effects however. This is a minimal downside but a downside to keep in mind. In general it is a good card.

Striped Bikini, Shiyoko    CGS/WS01-T15   2 Copies

Trait 1: カードゲーム (Card Game)
Trait 2: 水着 (Swimsuit)

[C] If there are 6 or more cards in your hand, this gains +1500 Power.

A 4000 power beater with a full hand.  This is the one of the best type of level o beater in the game as it is a perfect first turn option with minimal downside as you shouldn’t be playing too many cards at level 0 anyway. With an easy condition to meet, this card will do some work for you at level zero. This is certainly a good card.

Amiga Shiyoko   CGS/WS01-T16    2 copies

Trait 1: カードゲーム (Card Game)
Trait 2: 帽子 (Hat)

[S] [Counter] BACKUP 1500, Level 1 [Discard this card from your hand to the Waiting Room]

A zero cost 1500 backup, while it isn’t the best type of counter in the game, it is still a useful card to have. The 1500 power can make a difference especially at level 1. We have another solid card here.

Backup Shiyoko    CGS/WS01-T17    2 Copies

Trait 1: カードゲーム (Card Game)
Trait 2: 忍 (Ninja)

A] When you use the BACKUP[/B[ of this, if you have a Character with “Shiyoko” in name, choose 1 of your Characters in battle, and that Character gains +1000 Power for the turn.
[S] [Counter] BACKUP 2500, Level 2 [(1) Discard this card from your hand to the Waiting Room]

This is a good counter card. Since all but one of the character cards have Shiyoko in the name this card will be a 3500 counter pretty much all the time. These type of counters are always hard to play around. This helps the level 1 cards survive until lvl 3 and makes the level 3 cards in the deck more dangerous. I really like this card.

Recording Shiyoko    CGS/WS01-T18   2 Copies

Trait 1: カードゲーム (Card Game)
Trait 2: ヘッドフォン (Headphones)

[C] ASSIST All your Characters in front of this gain +X Power. X = 500 times Level of that Character.
[S] [Rest this] Look at the top card of your Library. (Put the card you looked at back where it was)

The trend continues of having cards with multiple good effects. I really like the free top check effect which can be repeated once per turn.  This is a relatively rare repeatable top checking ability.

WeiB Shiyoko     CGS/WS01-T19    2 Copies

Trait 1: カードゲーム (Card Game)
Trait 2: None

[C] If there are 2 or fewer Climax cards in your Waiting Room, this gets -1 Level while in your hand.
[C] For each of your other ::Card Game:: Characters, this gains +500 Power.
[A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, you may put the top card of your Clock in the Waiting Room.

This type of card seems underwhelming but it is actually quite good. The early play condition is really easy to execute if you manage your deck correctly, the card is guaranteed to be pumped by an additional 200o power since the entire deck is Card Game Characters and it heals. The early heal at level 2 plus the fact that it will kill quite a few of your opponents characters makes for another good level 3 card. Again it is sad that you only receive 2 copies of this card.

Manner Lecture   CGS/WS01-T20   1 copy

[Counter] Put the top card of your Library in the Waiting Room. If it’s a Level 1 or higher card, choose up to 2 of your Characters, and they gain the following ability for the turn. “[C] Character Opposite this gains +6 Soul. That Character cannot Side Attack.” (Climax cards are considered Level 0 for this effect)

This is the one card in this set that I am not a huge fan of. This seems like a cool card at first but there are plenty of things which can go wrong if it is not played at the right time or you just have bad luck. The whole idea behind this card is do drastically increase the chance of cancelling. First you remove card from the deck then you force your opponent to attack you for a lot of damage hoping that you will cancel. This card can go wrong in multiple ways. First you can pay 1 stock hit a level 0 or climax and not trigger the effect. If you hit a climax you remove a cancel as well. The second thing is that you could have a poor shuffle or poor luck and take all the damage and lose the game. This card is just too high of a risk to play. It is a fun idea but not very reliable.

Everyone Card Gaming   CGS/WS01-T21  2 copies

Triggers: 2 Soul

[C] All your Characters gain +2 Soul.

I usually am not a fan of plus 2 soul climaxes but in this case with a semi competitive deck and the cards that are included this climax could be quite useful. You will want to push for damage with this deck before your opponent can execute their endgame and this card at 2 copies will fit the bill nicely.

Overall, I was really impressed with this deck. I didn’t expect two much considering it is a promo set with a limited card pool but this deck delivers. For the most part the deck includes all of the tolls to function and function effectively. This will have a hard a time against your top tier deck but may be able to steal a game here or there.  The point of the set was to provide both a fun collectors option and to provide everything to a new player to get them started while showing them different types of tools that could be useful in a more competitive deck.

This deck succeeds in achieving those goals. Most of the cards in this deck are the card types that I would recommend to anyone building a deck for the first time. The card conditions are easy to meet and many of the cards are good picks for a new player with tech that is easy to understand. In addition the cards help to teach strategies and techniques which are useful to learn. My one minor complaint is the card ratios as the deck may suffer from consistency issues with many of the great cards only coming in quantities of 2. This is easily fixed by tracking down singles or by buying a second set but it would have been nice if you didn’t have to do that.In general though I was happy with my decision to purchase this set. I have already ordered a few singles to complete the deck and plan on playing with the completed deck.  This set is certainly worth picking up if you are a diehard Weiss fan or looking for something to get into the game. Besides the artwork is just adorable, how can you pass this set up?

This concludes my set review (which took way longer than anticipated). I intend to post a deck profile with the changes made to the deck at a later date. Next up will be a (much shorter) review of the Log Horizon power set. I hope to do a Clannad one as well after a little bit of research into the set.
