Weiss Schwarz Weekly: Log Horizon Set Review-Red

Greetings! Railgunfan75 here with part 2 of my Log Horizon Set Review. This time I will be discussing some of the red cards from the set. As usual all translations and photos are from heartofthecards.com and for the official English card names, head to ws-tcg.com. So let’s get started!

Marielle, Nagisa’s Angel

Trait 1: 魔法 (Magic)
Trait 2: 水着 (Swimsuit)

[C] All your other Characters with either ::Weapon:: and/or ::Magic:: gain +500 Power.
[A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, you may put the top 3 cards of your Library in the Waiting Room.
[A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, put the top card of your Library in the Waiting Room. Put this in Stock if that card was a Climax card.

This card is an amazing card. Here you have a great combination of effects. Global supports are always good and this one covers the two main traits of the set. This card is good just because of this effect. However, what makes this card great is that on play it is essentially a free brainstorm. This card works great to help you get through a deck which has already used all of its climaxes. The cards “downside” is really not much of a downside as a revealed climax means you get a free stock. In a set with a very expensive endgame, a free stock can be really nice. It is important to note that both mill effects activate at the same time so you can pick the order that you use these effects. In addition the mill 3 is optional so you are not forced to do so if you know you will trigger clean stock with those cards. There are only benefits to playing this card, I certainly recommend including it in any Log Horizon deck.

Akatsuki, Master’s Ninja

Trait 1: 武器 (Weapon)
Trait 2: 忍 (Ninja)

[C] This cannot Side Attack.
[A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage or via CHANGE to the Stage, you may put the top card of your Clock in the Waiting Room.
[A] When this attacks, if “Two’s Waltz” is in the Climax Zone, this gains +4000 Power and the following ability for the turn: “[A] When the Battle Opponent of this becomes Reversed, you may deal 1 Damage to your Opponent.” (Damage Cancel can occur)

Two’s Waltz

Triggers: Salvage

[C] All your Characters gain +1000 Power and +1 Soul.

And for those who are curious…here is the level 2 changer.

Akatsuki, Maiden’s Heart

Trait 1: 武器 (Weapon)
Trait 2: 忍 (Ninja)

[A] When this is placed to the Stage, reveal the top card of your Library. Put it in your hand if that card is a Character with either ::Weapon:: and/or ::Magic::, and discard a card from hand to the Waiting Room. (Otherwise put the card back where it was)
[A] CHANGE [(2) Discard a card from hand to the Waiting Room, Put this in the Waiting Room] At the start of your Climax Phase, you may pay cost. If so, choose 1 “Akatsuki, Master’s Ninja” in your Waiting Room and put it in the Slot this was in.

So here we have the red level 3 combo for the set. The level 3 climax combo is the highlight of the set. The additional attacks in the form of burn abilities are always a good thing to have. The condition of it being on reverse to burn is no problem as  this card get insanely big if you include the Shiroe assist. Reaching a power level of over 18000 is really easy and that power will reverse with ease 99% of cards in the game.  In many cases such an effect would have a cost but this combo is free which sweetens the deal in a set which has a cost two assist. The climax it combos with is a gate which is another positive. This is what the set aims for- pulling off burns with multiple Akatsuki cards at once. When you can pull it off, the effect can be quite devastating for your opponent. In addition this card has a heal effect as well which is always a good effect. The downside of not being able to side attack is really insignificant for a level 3 as your are really going to want to be pushing for damage anyway.

This card can be summoned early with a level 2 change effect. This change effect is not that great in my opinion. The change cost is really expensive in any set. In this set however, it is really expensive. The Shiroe assist is so worth playing that you want to save as much stock as possible at level 1 and level 2. In addition, the level 3 doesn’t get as big in terms of power at level 2 and with any sets having sizable level 3 cards at theor disposal at level 2, the climax combo is not a sure thing at level 2. The top check/hand fixing effect of the level 2 card is nice but the change is too costly to warrant playing. In short run the level 3 climax combo but don’t run the change to the level 3.

Akatsuki, Not Good at Dressing Herself?

Trait 1: 武器 (Weapon)
Trait 2: 忍 (Ninja)

[A] ENCORE [Put the top card of your Library in your Clock]
[S] [Rest 1 of your ::Magic:: Characters] This gains +1000 Power for the turn.

On your this card can get large in terms of power. Probably the best cost 1 character in the set, this is a solid option at level 1. Compared to other level 1 characters in other sets, this is a bit lackluster. However, I have come to discover that clock encore characters at level 1 can be quite useful. They can work nicely to sustain field if you have a weaker level 1 game than your opponent. The rest ability on this card should help you survive on your turn and the encore effect can help you on the opposing turn especially since it will be fairly weak on defense. At the very least, this card will help you sustain hand size. During a good game, it can help to increase it. A solid option at level 1 for sure.

Akatsuki, Quiet Worker

Trait 1: 武器 (Weapon)
Trait 2: 忍 (Ninja)

[A] [(2)] When you use the BACKUP of this, you may pay cost. If so, return all cards in your Waiting Room to the Library and shuffle your Library.

[S] [Counter] BACKUP 2500, Level 2 [(1) Discard this card from hand to the Waiting Room]

I think this type of card is great. For 3 stock you can potentially save a character and refresh without taking damage. This can be a great defensive method to recover from climax trouble or potentially save the game for you by preventing 1 damage. Three stock is an ok cost for this as it can serve two purposes. I did mention about conserving stock earlier but if spending that stock can ensure that you can survive the turn, then it is certainly worth it. Also considering that not all sets have this option available to them, this is a worth inclusion in a deck.

Rundelhaus, Sorcerer

Trait 1: 魔法 (Magic)
Trait 2: None

[C] For each of your other Character with either ::Weapon:: and/or ::Magic::, this gains +500 Power.
[A] [(3) Discard 2 cards from hand to the Waiting Room] When this attacks, you may pay cost. If so, deal 5 Damage to your Opponent. (Damage Cancel can occur)

I have seen this card splashed into some decks and personally I don’t think that this card is that great. You have to pay 2 stock for this card plus 3 more and discard 2 cards for the burn effect. It is just way too expensive for an effect which is only going to flush out a climax anyway. The set does not have many ways to push for extra damage but the downsides to playing are just too high except on a desperate final turn. In addition this card will max out at 11000 power which is very easy to get over at level 2. The level 3 Akatsuki is better by quite a large margin.

Akatsuki-chan Changed Clothes

Choose up to 2 Characters in your Waiting Room and return them to your hand.

This type of event is a relatively common one. The ability to trade this card and two stock for any two characters from your waiting room is great. Since there really isn’t many great level 2 options especially in the English set, this card can replenish your hand after all of your level 1 characters have been defeated. Also if you haven’t been able to get the cards in hand already, you can the pull the level 3 Shiroe and the level 3 Akatsuki from the waiting room and set up your endagme. Especially for English players, this card might be worth consideration.

Comparing the two colors, red is really where this set shines. There are a lot of nice abilities available to the color and the color also includes many of the pieces which would be considered the backbone of any deck. Not discussed here but also important, red includes a level o and level 1 reverser as well. Both cards can be quite useful in a Log Horizon deck. In addition the set does have a drop searcher which I thought was a nice inclusion in a small set. You have plenty of card options from this color.

As far as the overall set, I think this set is a bit underrated especially since it is an extra booster. The set has a lot of tools that many sets wish they had. The level 0 game has some good options, level 1 is a little below par but good enough to get the job done, the level 2 game is really non existent, and the level 3 game is superb. While not a top tier set by any means, this set is still worth playing and has the capability of giving some top sets trouble. The weak level 1 game plus a bit of a consistency issue hurts this set a bit. These issues are helped with the power up set, but if you are playing the English version- you don;t have those tools available to you yet. Overall a good set in my opinion.
