Weiss Schwarz: Fate/ Prisma Illya Kaleidoscope Deck Profile

Greetings! Railgunfan75 here. This month the English Game gets a new set- Fate Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya or Illya for short. I thought I would feature this set next here. I am working on a way to a set overview/review and hope to have it done around the time of the set release in English. The set has been out in Japan for some time and I am sure there are English players who are curious about what the set has to offer. For my next deck profile, I will feature a deck build which has made waves in the Japanese guild especially of late- the Kaleidoscope build.

It is important to note that we will be getting only a portion of the cards available in Japanese because the English release won’t include the latest booster and this deck is built with the Japanese version of the set. Because of that this deck profile contains some cards from that set. However, the core of this deck will be available on the set release and the remaining cards you can just fill in based on preference.  This deck has a lot of flexibility and will function just fine without the set 3 cards anyway. To aid in determining which cards will be available from this list, the cards from sets included in the English release will be highlighted with an (E) to indicate that it will be included in the release. As usual all images and translations are from heartofthecards.com- so let’s get started!

Deck Strategy

At Level 0, The Kuro runner serves as your main beater with the Kuro reverser there to dispose of anything else and to pull needed cards from the waiting room. The rest of the level zero serves as utility to aid and to set up later levels. There is a bonder/top checker to set up the level 1 game or to help set up brainstorm effects. The deck has both of the sets top brainstormers to allow you to either hand fix or search. There are fewer search brainstomers in this deck because the Kuro can pull from waiting room which is a needed effect and and serves as a nice assist. The main idea is pretty simple, use the runner to sustain field and the other effects to set up level 1 play.

The level 1 gameplay is different than many meta decks, This deck does not have a climax combo to worry about (though different variants do have one and it is a viable option). The level focuses on keeping field presence and starting the process of setting things up for level 3. Miyu “Coincidence” and Magical Idol Illya are used the deck’s primary level 1 beaters. Illya is a nice large beater and Miyu can be encored to sustain field and keep up on damage when needed.  Illya is bondable so using the using the bonder Miyu to pay out stock and top checking your deck can be a good play at this level as well. “Changing” Kuro can be used to get over anything that the other two can’t handle. The Illya backup and Miyu Lvl 1 assist provide plenty of defensive tools to keep your characters alive. Finally, “Yukata and Fireworks” Illya can be used to either get you more level 1 cards or to start filtering out Level 3s from your deck. Keep in mind that many of these effects do have an experience requirement, so having a level 3 in your level zone at this stage is ideal.

At level 2, there are two good plays. The main play is to use “Kind Bond” Illya as a great way to hand fix, maybe pay out part of the Level 3 combo and to play down a nice beater to help the transition to level 3. If needed, Miyu at the Large Bath of the Lluvia Mansion can serve as a mean to refresh the deck for free to get and get needed cards back into the deck. Besides that, you keep playing level 1’s and 0’s to generate stock and to take advantage of the hand fixing options. By the time you get to level 3, you should be at least partially ready to execute the game ending combo.

At Level 3 , the main strategy is to execute the climax combo. The hope is that you have 2 copies of “Class Card Saber”, at least 1 copy each of Kaleidoscope Illya and Kaleidoscope Miya and 1 Illya Normal Scenery. Ideally you will play Kaleidoscope Illya first, then Miyu, followed by Illya Normal Scenery. This sequence allows you to cycle through the maximum amount of cards (if you have an occupied backrow, 6  cards minimum) and finally set up the deck so that you mill a level 0 or 1.If the game is going well, you should have few level 3s in your deck as they should in hand, waiting room, level zone or stock. It needs to mentioned that Miyu doesn’t need to be in the front row, so one strategy is to place Miyu in the back row which still allows the combo to go off and to possibly have a piece in place for another round of burns on a future turn. Miyu does have its uses in the front row though. The draw ability with the climax combo activates when it is the front row allowing you to replenish your hand a bit  or give one final chance to get you a second Class Card Saber. Also if your opponent has a weaker character left over on the field, the bottom decking ability could be useful especially if you opponent has only a few cards left in their deck. Because this is a very all or nothing strategy, timing on using the combo is key.  This deck is fine if you get to level 3 first, just as long as your opponent isn’t too far behind (being at 2/5 or 2/6 is ok.). Using the combo and leaving your opponent at level 3 can be troublesome as the deck really doesn’t have many defensive tools to stop an opponent from executing their endgame strategy.

Finally it is important to note that the climax lineup for this deck has some flexibility. Running 4 Class Card Saber is a must but the other 4 climax slots can be filled based on your preferred style. Many builds run a second Gate (salvage a climax) climax to ensure that they can pull the climax from the waiting room. I included comeback climaxes to give me an option to pull characters from the waiting room- something that the Illya/Miyu/Kuro builds like this have fewer options for. A third option is to run book climaxes for more drawing power. All 3 are viable options here especially if you choose to not run a level 1 combo.

In summary, the main strategy is to use Levels 0-2 to build stock, try to keep even with damage, and set up the Kaleidoscope combo. Sounds simple right?

Strengths

This deck can deal a lot of damage in one turn- a lot! It is not unreasonable to push your opponent from mid level 2 to level 4 with the deck’s end game combo. This combo can add a minimum of 3 attacks, more if you can meet the combo conditions multiple times. Yes the combo is stackable you just need more copies of the Illya on the field and the climax in hand. In most cases though adding one burn is the most common scenario and even then you can deal a lot of damage or flush out a lot of climaxes for the next turn.  The Kaleidoscope Combo can be one of the most dangerous endgames in the game.

A second area where the deck shines is the deck’s ability to tailor your hand. There are plenty of options for handfixing in this deck with the purpose of helping sustaining field in the midgame and setting up the combo in the endgame. As an extension of this, the constant hand fixing also allows you to tailor you deck. The deck needs to have a few higher level characters as possible for the Kaleidoscope combo to activate and this deck has plenty of cards which let you get those cards out of the deck. The actual Kaleidoscope cards help with this but Illya Normal Scenery is the best at this since you can basically determine what you will mill when playing the combo.

The deck is also lost cost in the early game as well but has stock outs if you need them. For the deck’s early game to function and function well, very little stock is required. You have the brainstormers and the searcher if needed but everything else has effects which cost very little. Because of this, the deck has an easy time generating stock for it’s late game. Even the early play level 3 technically only costs 1 stock.

Weaknesses

One significant weakness can lie with the combo itself. The combo does require a lot to happen and while the deck is designed to ensure that you can get the combo off, there will be games where either it won’t be the case or the combo fails. If either of these happens, the deck kind of sits dead in the water and can be preyed upon by a strong opponents end game.

Another potential drawback is that this deck doesn’t have very many defensive to stop your opponents end game. If the combo doesn’t finish off your opponent then it can be a tense next turn for you.

One final issue can occur with the player themselves. The deck requires to make a lot of difficult decisions and a wrong one can result in a tough time for the player. You need to meet a lot of conditions and a fair amount of stock for the endgame, so early game decisions can make or break this deck. This is not a deck for a rookie or novice player to try. While the game plan may seem simple, the execution can be tricky.
