Weiss Schwarz Railgun S Power Up Set Review

Greetings! Railgunfan75 back with some more Weiss content! December had a slew of releases from the Rabbits EB to P5 to a handful of power up sets. As promised I will still do a set review for both sets of Rabbits, but I wanted to tackle the Power Up Sets first. I will be discussing all 3 of the recent power up sets starting with Railgun S.

While I was excited for all 3, the Railgun one interested me most of all. I have featured a deck profile for Railgun in the past and while the set is solid, the set has fallen behind the meta game a bit. The set has a boring and ineffective level 1 game, is missing some utility, and needs a slight bump for it’s endgame. Does the Power Up set aid the set at all? Well read on and find out.

As usual all translations are from heartofthecards.com. And since there is an issue with the images from Heart of the Cards, the images are taken from https://outakuya.wordpress.com/.

So without any further delay, let’s get started!

Uiharu, After School
(Judgment)
[A] When your Climax is placed in the Climax Zone, choose 1 of your Characters, and that Character gains +1 Level and +500 Power for the turn.
[S] BRAINSTORM [(1) Rest this] Flip over the top 4 cards of your Library and put them in the Waiting Room. For each Climax card revealed this way, search your Library for up to 1 Character that is either traitless or ::ESP::, reveal it, put it in your hand, and shuffle your Library.

This card is simple but well needed in the set. The only brainstorm of note from the Railgun set was the Mikoto brainstorm which killed cost zero characters. That card is still a great card but it didn’t solve a main problem that Railgun had- the inability to plus effectively. The first plussing brainstorm on the Railgun set, this card is not flashy but a very effective card. Search brainstorms are always a good addition to any deck and the fact that this allows you to possibly brainstorm a second time with it’s generous rest self condition. The second effect is good early game but doesn’t do much at level 2 or 3. Finally it color fixes nicely for the next card on the list. A good card which should be included with the Mikoto brainstorm in some capacity.

Saten, After School
 20161213_8 Trait 1: None   Trait 2: None
[A] [(2) Discard 2 cards from your hand to the Waiting Room, Rest 1 of your other Standing Characters that is either traitless or ::ESP::] This ability activates up to once per turn. During the turn this is placed from hand to the Stage, when the Character in your Front Row Center Slot attacks, you may pay cost. If so, Stand this.
[A] When this attacks, choose 1 of your other Characters that is either traitless or ::ESP::, and that Character gains +2000 Power for the turn.

This card is the reason that you would want to play Green in new Railgun decks. This is an outstanding game ending card. The restand ability is great because it doesn’t require you to reverse something and can still trigger even if Saten is reversed herself. The cost may seem high but because the early and midgame play can be so cheap with some of the other cards on the list, there shouldn’t be much of an issue pulling this off. Also the cards second effect lets you buff a certain other level 3 (MisaKurohttp://www.heartofthecards.com/code/cardlist.html?card=WS_RG/W13-052 ) by 4k if you attack twice with this, allowing that card a much greater chance of executing the burn. Just an excellent card period.

Kuroko, Summer Fun
(Judgment)
[A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, reveal the top card of your Library. If it’s a Character with either ::ESP:: or “Saten” in name, put it in your hand and discard a card from your hand to the Waiting Room. (Otherwise put it back where it was)
[A] [Return this to your hand] When your Climax is placed in the Climax Zone, you may pay cost. If so, choose 1 of your Characters, and that Character gains +2000 Power for the turn.

This card could arguably be the MVP of this Power Up Set. This card does so much work for such little investment. A handfixer, burst power giver, and effectively replaces any climax in hand. It also works great with the level 1 climax combo by opening a slot for a larger character and making a level 1 character on the field huge. It can also help MisoKuro by giving another means to add power to it if a climax is played. Let’s not forget the value of top checking and hand fixing as well. This gives a potential discard outlet if a character is revealed and if a climax is revealed the Uiharu can take full advantage. This card is a workhorse and works insanely well with other cards in the set.

Mikoto & Kuroko, Good Coordination
(Judgment)
[A] When your other Character becomes Reversed in battle, choose 1 of your Characters with either ::ESP:: or “Saten” in name, and that Character gains +1500 Power for the turn.
[S] [(2) Rest this] Choose a Character in your Waiting Room with either ::ESP:: or “Saten” in name and return it to your hand.

Who needs a assist card when you have this? This card can effectively ensure that you don’t get field wiped by potentially pumping something up by as much as 3000 power on either turn. Not only is the power boost insane at level 1 but it also forces your opponent to plan their attack sequence a little more carefully and possibly stop a turn with multiple plusses from on reverse combos. It can also give you a benefit from running into level 1 reversers by helping another character stay alive or help any level 3which needs to reverse for it’s effect (You know which one I’m referrring to.) That effect alone makes this card a worthwhile inclusion but add in a nice stock outlet for any character and you have another nice utility piece.

Mikoto, Summer Fun
(Frog)
[C] If you have 2 or more other ::ESP:: Characters, this gains +1000 Power.
[A] When “Normal Life Regained” is placed in your Climax Zone, if this is in the Front Row and there are 5 or fewer cards in your Stock, you may choose a Cost 0 or lower Character in your Waiting Room that is either traitless or ::ESP:: and put it in any Slot on the Stage.

I’ll admit that I wasn’t fully sold on this card on first. Initially I thought that because this combo doesn’t directly plus you or set up for the endgame that this card wouldn’t be that great. However, after a little play testing and seeing what the other new cards contribute I now have a fairly high opinion of this card. There are plenty of good things going for it. First, it a decent sized body at 5500 power with it’s first effect. Second, the combo costs nothing. Third, the combo allows to basically set sup some of your field from waiting room instead of hand including some key utility cards. Finally in conjunction with the Kuroko which I discussed early, you can possibly plus by returning Kuroko to hand. Sure it would be nice to set up your endgame with a level 1 combo but potentially giving yourself a full field with 2 or 3 cards from hand only proves to be quite nice. Overall a nice card.

Mikoto, Not Being True to Herself
(Frog)
[C] For each Character in your Opponent’s Back Row, this gains +500 Power.
[A] When this becomes Reversed in battle, you cannot use “[A] ENCORE” for the turn. (This includes “[A] ENCORE [(3)] provided by rules)

So we have a solid 6ooo or 6500 beater with a downside that really doesn’t mean much in this set. This fills a another hole which Railgun had, the lack of a nice mid-game beater. The power level is high enough where it can eliminate many level 1 characters. Plus add in the fact that Railgun has a couple of nice counters at level 1 and you can keep this alive fairly easily. And if it dies, the lack of encore doesn;t mean much since there are plenty of options for replenishing your field. Overall a solid level 1 card.

“That is All” Mikoto
(Frog)
[C] If “Kuroko, Summer Fun” is in your Clock, this gets -1 Level while in your hand.
[A] [Discard a Character card from your hand to the Waiting Room] When “Railgun” is placed in your Climax Zone, if this is in your Front Row and you have 2 or more other ::ESP:: Characters, you may pay cost. If so, choose a Level 3 or lower Character in your Opponent’s Front Row and put it in the Waiting Room, and reveal the top card of your Library. If it’s a Character that is either traitless or ::ESP::, choose a Level 2 or lower Character in your Opponent’s Back Row and put it in the Waiting Room.
[A] During your Opponent’s turn, when Damage taken by you isn’t Cancelled, if this is in the Front Row, look at the top card of your Library and put it either on top of the Library or in the Waiting Room.

So you have an early summon which requires a card which is a great utility card (and can easily be in hand) to be in your clock.  This card also combos with a climax you are likely running that can be a plus 2 soul, 2k +1, or Comeback climax depending on your personal choice. Add in the fact that the combo let’s you potentially wreck an opponents field state at level 2 or Level 3. If that wasn’t enough this card can let you mill off damage on defense. Add that all together and you get this card.A good early summon card which could certainly have it uses at level 3 as well. A very nice complement piece to the strong finishers that the set has.

Normal Life Regained
 20161215_14 Trigger: 2 Soul
[A] When this is placed from hand to the Climax Zone, choose up to 1 RED card in your Waiting Room and put it in your Stock, and all your Characters gain +1 Soul for the turn.

I am a huge fan of this climax type as are many people and am glad that this included in this set. Stock management was a huge issue for Railgun and this goes a long way towards fixing that issue. It is amazing how much difference just 1 extra stock can make in a game especially in a set that now has a great level 3 lineup. This also combos with a pretty solid level 1 card as well. Not much else to say here but this a good card and a welcome addition to the set.

In addition to the 8 cards released in the Power Up Pack, there were 2 Promos released for the set as well. I will discuss those as well. To my knowledge the first comes with the Power Up sets and the second card is a shop promo.

“Radio Noise” Sisters
[C] If this is on the Stage, this is also considered to have “Sisters” as the name.
[A] [Discard 2 cards from your hand to the Waiting Room] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, you may pay cost. If so, search your Library for up to 3 “Sisters”, put them in separate Slots on the Stage, and shuffle your Library.

This is a cool addition for those who wish to run the Accelerator and Sisters build. The one thing that build lacked was any real search mechanic. Now it has it. In an indirect way you are netting 1 card with it’s main effect and are much more likely to have enough “Sisters” on the field to take advantage of their effects. (For refrence here are the other Sisters cards http://www.heartofthecards.com/code/cardlist.html?card=WS_RG/W26-023 and http://www.heartofthecards.com/code/cardlist.html?card=WS_ID/W10-014 .)In addition this card also helps to full those conditions by counting as a “Sisters” itself. While this is a very Niche card it is a nice utility card.

Mikoto, Feeling Great
(Frog)
[C] If there are 2 or fewer cards in your Stock, this gains +1500 Power.

While the ability on this card is not bad, there is really no place or reason to run a card a like this in a Railgun deck. In addition to the great level 0 cards included in this set, Railgun has multiple good level 0 options including a runner (http://www.heartofthecards.com/code/cardlist.html?card=WS_RG/W13-059), multiple reversers (http://www.heartofthecards.com/code/cardlist.html?card=WS_RG/W26-059 & http://www.heartofthecards.com/code/cardlist.html?card=WS_ID/W13-T01) and other tech. I’ll at least say that the artwork is really nice on this card but besides that you have better options.

Overall, the Power Up Set is a welcome addition to the Railgun set. Many of the sets main issues are addressed with these cards and they are addressed with a flavor in the cards that has been lacking in some of the more recent sets. The set now has a stronger endgame, a good brainstorm effect and a mid game which can now keep up with many other sets. if you have already invested in the Railgun set and are looking to upgrade your deck, this is certainly a worthwhile investment. If you are looking at using this a starting off for getting into the set for the first time, this is a great option for that as well!

You can expect a decklist soon featuring the new cards coming soon! I have a couple of builds already constructed and will feature them once I have completed with the other Power Up Set Reviews. Next up is Haruhi! So until next time, this is Railgunfan75 signing off! See ya!
