Weiss Schwarz Overview: Re Zero Part 3: Yellow

Greetings! I return today with the third and final part of my Weiss Schwarz Overview for Re:Zero. If you are curious about the rest of the set, I have already done reviews for the other two colors (Weiss Schwarz Set Overview: Re Zero Part 2 -Red  Weiss Schwarz Set Overview – Re:Zero Part 1: Blue). So let’s get started with part 3! As usual, all images and translations are from heartofthecards.com.

RZ/S46-001   王選候補者 フェルト
Felt, Candidate for Royal Election
Trait 1: 武器 (Weapon)   Trait 2: 八重歯 (Double Tooth)
[C] If you have 3 or more other Characters with either ::Magic:: or ::Weapon::, this gains +2000 Power.
[A] When this attacks, search your Library for up to 1 Character with either ::Magic:: or ::Weapon::, reveal it, put it in your Stock, and shuffle your Library.
[A] [(2)] When this attacks, you may pay cost. If so, choose 1 of your Characters, and that Character gain the following ability for the turn. “[A] This ability activates up to once per turn. When the Damage dealt by this is Cancelled, you may deal 1 Damage to your Opponent.” (Damage Cancel can occur)
RZ/S46-013   貧民街のプライド フェルト
Felt, Pride of the Slums
Trait 1: 武器 (Weapon)   Trait 2: 八重歯 (Double Tooth)
[A] [Discard a “Girl of Gale” from your hand to the Waiting Room, Put this in the Waiting Room] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, if there are 5 or fewer cards in your Library, you may pay cost. If so, return all cards in your Waiting Room to your Library, search your Library for up to 1 Character with either “Felt”, “Old-Man Rom”, or “Reinhard” in name, reveal it, put it in your hand, search your Library for up to 1 “Felt, Candidate for Royal Election” and put it in the Slot this was in. Afterwards, shuffle your Library, and that Character gains +1000 Power for the turn.
RZ/S46-028   疾風の少女
Girl of Gale
Trait 1: None   Trait 2: None
[A] When this is placed from hand to the Climax Zone, choose up to 1 YELLOW card in your Waiting Room and put it in your Stock, and all your Characters gain +1 Soul for the turn.

This three card combo is one of the backbones of most mono yellow decks. It lets you early summon a level 3, refresh for 3 and compress your deck in the process by pulling up to two cards from you deck. The climax is definitely worth playing and the level 3 is good (I’ll talk more about that later).  These are all positive things for sure. This combo may seem broken but it isn’t without its downsides. The first is that the conditions for this to work can be difficult to execute. Having 5 or less cards in deck can be tricky enough but add in needing a specific climax in hand and the conditions are incredibly specific. There are also possibilities where you won’t have the search targets in your deck and this combo requires you to build your deck around it. Because of these reasons you will have plenty of times when the game just won’t let you execute this combo.

The Level 3 however by itself can be a worthwhile splash in any deck. It is a bit oversized  at 10500, gives you a finishing option for your deck, and lets you naturally compress your deck for free with each attack. The free stock ability lets you pull a damage out of your deck for free and lets you remove excess triggers in your deck if you need to do precision damage. The burn ability is nice because you can plan your damage easily (like assigning the burn to a direct attack that will likely cancel). The 2 stock cost is not insanely high in this case because Felt will generate 2 stock with each attack anyway- so it is basically free. The level 3 is an easy inclusion in the deck, the combo not so much.

RZ/S46-003   公爵家当主 クルシュ
Crusch, Head of the Karsten House
Trait 1: 魔法 (Magic)   Trait 2: 武器 (Weapon)
[C] During your turn, your other Character in the Front Row Center Slot gains +1000 Power.
[S] [(2) Rest this] Search your Library for up to 1 Character with either ::Magic:: or ::Weapon::, reveal it, put it in your hand, and shuffle your Library.
[S] BRAINSTORM [(1)] Flip over the top 4 cards of your Library and put them in the Waiting Room. For each Climax card revealed this way, search your Library for up to 1 Character with either ::Magic:: or ::Weapon::, reveal it, put it in your hand, discard a card from your hand to the Waiting Room, and shuffle your Library.

Next up we have the third and final brainstorm of the set. This is the only one that isn’t a plussing brainstorm but it also yields additional utility. With it you 2 additional useful effects as well. This is the sets’ only search card. I personally like a pay 2 search in the right circumstances. if you have an excessive amount of stock and have low hand size, this effect can be a lifesaver because it is a straight up plus- no discard needed. Also in a set like this one where there aren’t many universal search options, this type of effect can be useful to have. The third effect can be useful if you need to get over a trouble card on your opponents field. A 1k power buff is nothing to sneeze at even if it is to one slot. This could make a difference say for the Emilia level 3/Puck combo. Not the best brainstorm in the set, but if you are looking for a yellow splash and a solid search option then this card is certainly an option.

RZ/S46-005   宣戦布告 フェルト
Felt, Declaration of War
Trait 1: 武器 (Weapon)   Trait 2: 八重歯 (Double Tooth)
[A] At the start of your Opponent’s Attack Phase, you may put the top card of your Library in the Waiting Room. If it’s a Character with either ::Magic:: or ::Weapon::, you may move this to an empty Slot in your Front Row.

Mill runners have become a staple in many newer sets and they are popular for a reason. Not only can you avoid attackers, but you also can mill through your deck a bit. The condition for running is a guarantee most of the time. The mill option on the card checks for the two relevant traits in the set. So this is playable in many of Re:Zero deck types. This card does have a slight risk with the possibility of milling climaxes, but the payoff is well worth the risk. This is certainly a staple card in most builds.

RZ/S46-007   剣聖 ラインハルト
Reinhard, Sword Saint
Trait 1: 武器 (Weapon)   Trait 2: 騎士 (Knight)
[C] BODYGUARD
[C] EXPERIENCE If the sum of Level of cards in your Level Zone is 6 or higher and you have no other Characters, this gains +10000 Power and the following five abilities. “[C] This cannot be chosen as target of Opponent’s effects and cannot be Reversed by effects of [A] abilities of your Opponent’s Characters.” “[C] During battles involving this, your Opponent cannot play Events or BACKUP from hand.” “[A] When the Battle Opponent of this becomes Reversed, you may Send that Character to Memory.” “[A] [Discard a card from your hand to the Waiting Room] When the Battle Opponent of this becomes Reversed, you may pay cost. If so, deal 1 Damage to your Opponent.” “[A] At the start of your Opponent’s Attack Phase, you may move this to an empty Slot in your Front Row.” (Damage Cancel can occur)

This card seemed incredibly broken when it was first leaked months ago and while in practice it is strong, there are cases where this card is just not going to do much for you. Let’s start with the necessary conditions- first you need experience 6  which means you likely have to place other this or another of your level 3s in your zone. Second you need to empty your field meaning that key backrow characters like brainstorms which could be useful in future turns are lost to you. You also are going to have to play weak characters for you other attacks meaning that you could be succeptible to on reverse effects. Also by making sure your field is empty, you have to push up assists and such meaning its possible you may need to side attack with this to survive, not likely dealing damage to your opponent. Reinhard certainly has issues to play around. This card is an highly defensive card (odd for yellow) and focusing you deck on this can lead you to weakening your own attack power. Also wind triggers or bounce effects on your opponents turn just kill the card.

On the other hand, if you can execute this, you can certainly cause trouble for your opponents. The bodyguard effect for those aren’t aware is an effect where that if the card is in the front center slot of the stage, all of your opponents attacks become front into the bodyguard card unless the bodyguard card is reversed. At 20000 power if by itself, it will take a lot of work to reverse it. Also you can play this on a side slot, fight a weaker character on your turn and run it to the front center slot on your opponents turn to activate the bodyguard meaning you have a chance to keep this around beyond your turn. Finally, it is possible to finish off your opponent on their own turn with 3 burns if Reinhard kills 3 characters. While specific circumstances need to happen, the possibility of that is incredibly strong.

In short this card can be a powerful tool, however it can be a huge gamble to play and can either not work for you or backfire on you. This card should be used with caution.

RZ/S46-008   交渉上手 アナスタシア
Anastasia, Good at Negotiating
Trait 1: 商人 (Merchant)   Trait 2: None
[A] [Discard a card from your hand to the Waiting Room] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, you may pay cost. If so, look at up to 4 cards from top of your Library and search for up to 1 Character with either ::Merchant::, ::Beastman::, or ::Knight::, reveal it, put it in your hand, and put the rest in the Waiting Room.

The “Azusa” effect as it is known is a really powerful effect. To have the ability to hand fix and get a free mill 4 for no stock is incredibly strong. Sadly though this card does not search more many of the cards in the set and it is off trait itself. Because of this, this card needs to built around and building around a level 0 that only searches for a portion of the cards of the set is not a great idea. Unless you are running a mono yellow build with these traits, pass on this card.

RZ/S46-009   治癒術師 フェリックス
Felix, Healing Mage
Trait 1: 魔法 (Magic)   Trait 2: 騎士 (Knight)
[C] Your other Character with “Crusch” in name in the Front Row Center Slot gains +1500 Power.
[C] ASSIST All your Characters in front of this gain +500 Power.
[S] [(2) Rest this] Put the top card of your Clock in the Waiting Room.

This card is a solid option. This card has a nice heal effect which can be used as early as level 1 which can be a handy way to pay out excessive climaxes or key cards. The assist is a nice incentive to play in the backrow. Because of this it could see play in blue decks. This card really can shine when you use this in “Crusch” heavy decks to optimize the 1500 power buff and give a character in the front center a 2k power boost. One such card which can benefit is shown below.

RZ/S46-010   白鯨討伐 クルシュ
Crusch, Fighting White Whale
Trait 1: 魔法 (Magic)   Trait 2: 武器 (Weapon)
[C] If all your Characters are either ::Magic:: or ::Weapon::, this gains +4000 Power.
[A] When this attacks, if you have 3 or more other Characters with either ::Magic:: or ::Weapon::, look at up to 2 cards from top of your Library, choose 1 of them and put it on top of your Library, and put the rest in the Waiting Room.
[A] [Discard a card from your hand to the Waiting Room] When this attacks, if “Hundred Man Sword Strike” is in the Climax Zone, you may pay cost. If so, put the top card of your Library in your Stock, look at up to 2 cards from top of your Library, choose up to 1 of them and put it in your hand, and put the rest in the Waiting Room.
RZ/S46-029   百人一太刀
Hundred Man Sword Strike
Trait 1: None   Trait 2: None
[C] All your Characters gain +1000 Power and +1 Soul.

This card is a natural 6k with a relatively full field. On it’s own it let’s you pick between 2 options for triggers at the top of the deck. This alone is a powerful effect as it gives you the option to stop climaxes from going to stock or control damage output for an attack. With the climax, it generates an extra stock (which you can pick from the other ability) and let’s you hand fix for no cost. This is certainly one of the more unique climax combos and you can set up a nice little stock engine and repeatedly tailor you hand with repeated use of this combo. With the Felix the card will even sit a 6.5 to 8k with one copy or up to 10k if you have 2 Felix in the back row or have a counter. In all likely hood at least 1 will survive until the next turn giving an opportunity to repeat the process. This is a good secondary climax combo option though it is certainly outshined by the Emilia combo.

RZ/S46-023   同盟への交渉 クルシュ
Crusch, Negotiating with the Alliance
Trait 1: 魔法 (Magic)   Trait 2: 武器 (Weapon)
[C] If you have 3 or more other Characters with either ::Magic:: or ::Weapon::, this gains +2000 Power.
[S] [Discard 2 cards from your hand to the Waiting Room] This gains the following ability for the turn. “[C] When this attacks, you may instead choose a Character in your Opponent’s Back Row and have this Front Attack that Character as Defending Character.”

Next up we have a hard which can serve a nice beater especially in conjunction with the Felix. This is in essence a 7k beater with an additional effect. This effect is really questionable. While the ability to get rid of back row characters especially against sets that have a reliance on back row characters like Index or Log Horizon, the cost for this effect is really expensive. Discarding 2 cards is an insanely high cost for a set which doesn’t have an abundance of field sustaining options. The power curve is relatively low until you get to the late game and you need to keep cards in hand for many of the decks in this set to thrive. Ditching 2 cards from hand and paying 1 stock to play this to kill one just seems inefficient.  Worth including in a mono yellow deck because of it’s name and power but not worth playing in other decks.

RZ/S46-027a   王選
Royal Election
Trait 1: None   Trait 2: None
Discard a card from your hand to the Waiting Room.
Declare 1 of the following combinations.
(a) Character with “Crusch” in name AND Character with “Felix” in name,
(b) Character with “Priscilla” in name AND Character with “Aldebaran” in name,
(c) Character with “Anastasia” in name AND Character with “Julius” in name,
(d) Character with “Emilia” in name AND Character with either “Roswaal”, “Puck”, or “Subaru”,
(e) Character with “Felt” in name AND Character with “Reinhard” in name.
Search your Library for 1 of each Character in the combination you declared, reveal them, put them in your hand, and shuffle your Library.
(TL note: If you choose (d), you get 1 “Emilia” and 1 other character that’s either a “Roswaal”, “Puck”, or “Subaru”. You don’t get to get 4 characters this way.)

This is really an interesting event. One can make arguments for and against running this. First I will address the downsides.  First off it is basically a double hand fix not a plussing card. While this isn’t inherently bad, handfixes don’t get you as much advantage as other options. There is also the possibly that one of the targets you declare is not in the deck meaning that possibly could lose a card from your hand. As for the positives, you do remove 2 cards from your deck meaning you are compressing your deck. You also get to do this for one stock. This card can be a nice way to discard an excess climax from your hand. Also, with the right deck construction this card could be useful. For example this card would be great in yellow blue deck which runs the Emilia finisher, the 1/0 Puck and the 1/0 Climax combo Emilia. This event could be useful under the right circumstances, you just have to pick the right deck construction.
