Weiss Schwarz Star Wars Set Overview Part 1: Red

Greetings! Yes it is finally time to discuss the Star Wars Booster! I have previously discussed the trial deck (Weiss Schwarz: Star Wars Trial Deck Review) but that is small potatoes compared to the booster. A whopping 120 cards encompassing all 4 colors, there is lot to discuss with this set. So why delay any longer- why don’t we get started with the Dark Side color, Red.

As usual, all translations are from http://www.heartofthecards.com.

SW/S49-053   “再会と死闘”ダース・ベイダー
“Reunion And Duel” Darth Vader
Trait 1: 新たなる希望 (A New Hope)   Trait 2: None
[C] If there are 2 or fewer Climax cards in your Waiting Room, this gets -1 Level while in your hand.
[C] If you have 3 or more other RED Characters, this gains +1500 Power and you do not take damage from effects of your Opponent’s Characters’ [A] abilities during battles involving this.
[A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, you may put the top card of your Clock in the Waiting Room.
[A] [(2) Discard a card from your hand to the Waiting Room] When this is Front Attacked, you may pay cost. If so, deal 1 Damage to your Opponent. (Damage Cancel can occur)

The early summon option for the Sith (Mono Red) deck and it is a viable option. The condition to play it at level 2 is very easy to accomplish and arguably the best condition for this type of effect. It is also a healer which is also great especially at level 2. The other 2 effects are what this card interesting. The first anti burn effect can be really useful in certain matchups. Many of the most powerful combos in the game today are burn combos so at least stopping the extra damage in one slot can save the game for you. The final effect can be nice for pushing an additional damage on your opponents turn. The cost is a bit expensive, so spamming this might not be an option in many games but if your opponent is 3/6 and this is on the board, they could think twice about attacking it.

SW/S49-054   カイロ・レン
Kylo Ren
Trait 1: フォースの覚醒 (The Force Awakens)   Trait 2: None
[C] For each of your other RED Characters, this gains +500 Power.
[C] Character Opposite this gets -1 Soul.
[A] [(2)] When the Battle Opponent of this becomes Reversed, you may pay cost. If so, deal 1 Damage to your Opponent. (Damage Cancel can occur)
[A] FORCE [(1) Discard a Character card from your hand to the Waiting Room] At the start of your Climax Phase, you may pay cost. If so, choose 2 of your Opponent’s Characters, then Stand and Swap them.

Next up we have another red level 3 card and this one is probably the weakest of the options for the red deck. This card isn’t bad by any means but it is not very strong either. This is the 1st card that I will be discussing that has the Force Mechanic. As the text states, the mechanic lets you swap positions for two of your opponents characters. In many cases it has a payoff. This card needs to reverse something to pull off it’s burn effect and in conjunction with the Force ability it can do that by attacking a backrow or weaker character. This card will likely be at 11k or higher with it’s continuous effect which gives it a fair shot of reversing though it is not guaranteed against level 3s Many level 3s can easily top 11k meaning the force effect  will likely be needed. The burn effect in addition costs an additional 2 stock. This means you will likely be paying 3 and discarding a card to burn 1 which is not that great. Also the -1 soul effect is generally good in only a few situations. This is an ok card with better options in the set like the one below.

SW/S49-055   “シスの暗黒卿”ダース・ベイダー
“Dark Sith Lord” Darth Vader
Trait 1: 帝国の逆襲 (The Empire Strikes Back)   Trait 2: None
[A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, draw up to 2 cards and discard a card from your hand to the Waiting Room.
[A] CX COMBO [(2) Discard a card from your hand to the Waiting Room] When this attacks, if “I am your father.” is in the Climax Zone, you may pay cost. If so, deal 1 Damage to your Opponent, and this gains +2500 Power and the following ability for the turn. “[A] When the Battle Opponent of this becomes Reversed, you may deal 1 Damage to your Opponent.” (Damage Cancel can occur)
[A] FORCE [(1) Discard a Character card from your hand to the Waiting Room] At the start of your Climax Phase, you may pay cost. If so, choose 2 of your Opponent’s Characters, then Stand and Swap them.
SW/S49-083   I am your father.
I am your father.
Trait 1: None   Trait 2: None
[A] When this is placed from hand to the Climax Zone, choose up to 1 RED card in your Waiting Room and put it in your Stock, and all your Characters gain +1 Soul for the turn.

This combo is easily the best finishing option that the set has to offer. Vader has an on plat effect which replaces itself and helps you find the climax for the combo. Vader also has a force ability which lets you have more control over the battle opponent, and has an amazing combo. The combo in itself lets you burn twice which is amazing, gives Vader power to help ensure a reverse for the second burn and because of the climax being a stock soul, the first use of the combo is actually only 1 stock and 1 card from hand. The two separate burns are incredibly powerful-either they will deal 2 damage or flush out 2 climaxes for larger attacks to go through, a win-win scenario. In addition, the cost for this combo and the conditions are mitigated by it’s own effects. Vader replaces himself on play which keeps cards in hand to discard, and can attack a backrow card using the force effect or gain the necessary power to reverse from the combo. Even better it doesn’t have color or trait restrictions for it’s effects like other cards in the set. Easily the best card combo this set has to offer.

SW/S49-057   “外されたマスク”カイロ・レン
“Mask Off” Kylo Ren
Trait 1: フォースの覚醒 (The Force Awakens)   Trait 2: None
[A] [(1) Put the top card of your Library in your Clock] When the Battle Opponent of this becomes Reversed, you may pay cost. If so, choose a Character in your Waiting Room and return it to your hand.
[A] When this becomes Reversed, if the Level of the Battle Opponent of this is 0 or lower, you may Reverse that Character.

Level 0 reversers are still a staple in many decks and this one is no exception. I have discussed the reverser effect before so I won’t dwell on it but I will say that these effects are generally good. I will discuss however it’s second effect. The card can essentially replace itself when it kills something. The effect in itself could be quite useful by helping you setup level 1 play and with the clock cost helping you get to level 1. However, this has the same problems as the riki clones plus some more issues. This card like the Rikis are only useful for a short time, this one an even shorter time. This card will only kill level 0s meaning that at level 1, you will likely not get the effect off. Also in the early game, your waiting room will likely be small meaning fewer targets to pull from. The Riki clones at leats let you search. This card does let you get anything instead of just level 1 or lower characters however. Overall a decent card, the effects could have their uses especially in the early game. This card is far from broken however.

SW/S49-058   “闇の指揮官”カイロ・レン
“Dark Commander” Kylo Ren
Trait 1: フォースの覚醒 (The Force Awakens)   Trait 2: None
[C] If you have 3 or more other RED Characters, this gains the following ability. “[A] When this becomes Reversed, if the Level of the Battle Opponent of this is 1 or lower, you may Reverse that Character.”
[A] FORCE [Discard a RED Character card from your hand to the Waiting Room] At the start of your Climax Phase, you may pay cost. If so, choose a Character Opposite this and 1 of your Opponent’s other Level 1 or lower Characters, then Stand and Swap them.

Next up we have a fairly standard level 1 reverser if you have field of only red characters. I personally feel that these types of cards can be a nice tech in especially against  decks which can have sizable level 1s. This card has the additional effect of being able to pick it’s battle opponent (The strong Force ability again) meaning it can kill a weak backrow character, stick around for your opponents turn and then trade with a level 1, netting you a two for 1 exchange. This can be a huge disruption to your opponents plans especially if the deck relies on backrow characters for it’s gameplan. This card is optimized for the red color deck lessening it’s value a bit but it is still a good card.

SW/S49-060   “悪に染まりし者”ダース・ベイダー
“Tainted by Darkness” Darth Vader
Trait 1: 新たなる希望 (A New Hope)   Trait 2: None
[A] When this is placed from hand to the Stage, this gains +1500 Power for the turn.
[A] CX COMBO When the Battle Opponent of this becomes Reversed, if “You are beaten.” is in your Climax Zone, you may choose a Character in your Waiting Room and return it to your hand.
SW/S49-084   You are beaten.
You are beaten.
Trait 1: None   Trait 2: None
[C] All your Characters gain +1000 Power and +1 Soul.

One of the advantage options and the level 1 combo for the red deck. This is a tame combo compared to many of those we have seen recently. This combo has it’s pros and cons for sure. On the positive side, the climax needed for the combo is a gate which is always a good climax trigger, the combo costs zero cost to activate, and the climax and the Vader’s on play effect give it a nice power buff. On the negative side, this combo is hindered by anti salvage (both the combo and the climax are less effective), the Vader is not unreachable in terms of power levels so the on reverse effect can be stopped, and the Vader is weak on defense. Certainly a service combo and one worth including in a deck, it is just not the guarentee that some other combos are.

SW/S49-062   皇帝
Emperor
Trait 1: ジェダイの帰還 (Return of the Jedi)   Trait 2: None
[C] If you have 4 or more RED Characters, this gets -1 Level while in your hand.
[C] ASSIST All your RED Characters in front of this gain +2000 Power and the following ability. “[A] During your turn, when the Battle Opponent of this becomes Reversed, look at the top card of your Library and put it either on top of the Library or in the Waiting Room.”
[A] [(1) Rest this] When you use FORCE, if this is Standing, you may pay cost. If so, deal 1 Damage to your Opponent. (Damage Cancel can occur)

Here is one of the payoffs for the Force effects on some of the other cards with a relatively cheap burn effect. This burn effect is made even stronger with the fact that this card has an early play condition meaning that you can potentially burn your opponent at level 2. The early play condition is an incredibly simple one to meet and if a game is going remotely well with the proper deck build this won’t be an issue. In addition, this gives 2k and a top check effect to all of the characters in front. The ability to control triggers or to move a non-climax to the waiting at the end of your turn has good offensive  and defensive abilities. On offense you can move soul triggers to your waiting room or climaxes you don’t wish to trigger. On defense, if the opponent crashes into your characters, you can possibly mill out damage. This card has multiple good applications and if you are running a red centric deck, this card is must play.

SW/S49-065   “巧みな謀略”ダース・ベイダー
“Skillful Strategy” Darth Vader
Trait 1: 帝国の逆襲 (The Empire Strikes Back)   Trait 2: None
[C] If all your Characters are RED, this gains +2000 Power.
[A] FORCE [Discard a RED Character card from your hand to the Waiting Room] At the start of your Climax Phase, you may pay cost. If so, choose a Character Opposite this and 1 of your Opponent’s other Level 0 or lower Characters, then Stand and Swap them.

Beaters like this one have fallen out of favor with many players but this one is certaibly worth consideration. The main reason for this is the Force effect. This card is a low cost way to dispose of brainstorm or other utility cards just like the others. As a Force option at level 0, this card can disrupt early game plans for your opponent. Also it can still be useful late game to help trigger the Emperor’s burn effect. This is nice option for the red deck.

SW/S49-056   “ダークサイド”ダース・ベイダー
“Dark Side” Darth Vader
Trait 1: ジェダイの帰還 (Return of the Jedi)   Trait 2: None
[A] When your other Character becomes Reversed in battle, choose 1 of your Characters, and that Character gains +500 Power for the turn.
[S] BRAINSTORM [(1) Rest this] Flip over the top 4 cards of your Library and put them in the Waiting Room. For each Climax card revealed this way, choose a Character in your Waiting Room and return it to your hand.

The brainstorm option is a typical salvage brainstorm which I have discussed at length previously. The fact that it just rests itself helps you to do other things with your turn with the second backrow slot which is nice. The secondary effect is quite mediocre but could help turn the tide of an occasional battle. A must play card but nothing special.

SW/S49-071   “多勢の兵”ストームトルーパー
“Crowd Tactics” Stormtrooper
Trait 1: フォースの覚醒 (The Force Awakens)   Trait 2: None
[C] You may have as many copies of cards with the same name as this in your deck.
[C] For each of your other ‘”Crowd Tactics” Stormtrooper’ in the Front Row, this gains +2000 Power.

This card is one of 3 which can serve as the backbone of a Stormtrooper deck (Yes that is a thing).  The other 2 cards are level 1 cards. I don’t believe I have discussed these type of cards or decks in too much detail but the idea is to simple spam the field with these cards and replace them usually with some event or utility card which lets you add multiples like this to hand. This is usually followed by some endgame option which takes advantage of there being a high amount of copies of the card in the deck- Accelerator and the Sisters deck from Railgun is a nice example of this. While this deck doesn’t have a card that directly pays off with these cards, the Vader endgame options certainly work with this card. While most of these decks/cards are nothing spectacular, they are definitely functional  and can win you some games. It is certainly a nice budget option for a deck as well.

That concludes my thoughts on the Red cards from Star Wars. The other colors will soon follow. What do you think of the cards and the set? Please comment below.
