Highlights
So many good shows to discuss on this list…
Steins; Gate 0 shines again with a pair of episodes which not only were entertaining as hell to watch but also started us down the path for some answers. We are now getting answers to Kagari’s past and wow it is an interesting story. Some pieces of her story were alluded to and weren’t entirely surprising but the series still managed to execute the reveal quite well. I also have to say that episode 12 with it’s time paradox both had me ecstatic and frustrated at the same time (all in a good way). And I am also anxiously awaiting the continuation of the cliffhanger at the end of episode 13…wow what an ending to that episode.
I will list the final episodes of Darling in the Franxx as a highlight here. Yes the finale could have been better (I was expecting something a bit more epic) however considering the plot elements and the previous episodes, I felt they actually did a nice job wrapping up the series. The series has always borderlined on the absurd and to see a finale which crossed that line didn’t surprise at all. I am glad that though that the ending was overall a positive one and one which had a nice message. I will elaborate my thoughts on the series in a future post.
Netflix added another exclusive to their lineup with Fate/ Extra Last Encore. I am always a sucker for more Fate stuff and I was excited to see this series finally released in the USA. I will honestly say that I really enjoyed the series. The new Saber was an absolute treat to watch (add her to long list of excellent Fate waifus), she stole the show easily. The series was definitely a refreshing take on the franchise- studio Shaft did an excellent job of adding new life to the universe with their awesomely unique style.
FLCL Progressive delivered another bombastic ending to it’s fans. The final 2 episodes were the standard insanity that we have come to expect from the franchise. And yet with the insanity, the managed to get most of the character arcs resolved in the series. That is definitely impressive. With that insanity there were also some nice emotional moments added as well. Watching FLCL is like watching a glorious trainwreck while on a roller coaster. The only thing to do is to sit back and enjoy the ride and it is one hell of a ride.
Megalo Box finished strong with an amazing final episode. The series delivered on the buildup that it generated from the beginning. The episode managed to give us an epic fight but also was able to spend time addressing the aftermath of the series’ events. The overall ride that the series provided was great and it certainly finished strong. Sports anime is a genre in which I am a relative newbie in and this series has certainly inspired me to check out more from the genre.
The third series which reached is finale was Sword Art Online Alternative. For the most part it stuck it’s landing. There are a couple of small issues with the episode but overall the finale was satisfying. I am certainly going to miss watching the characters of the series especially Karen/LLENN who is certainly of the better characters that SAO has to offer.
It just seems like Sousuke can’t catch a break at all. Episode 8 of Full Metal Panic IV was just brutal to watch (in a good way). We are reminded once again that Sousuke is indeed human with his doubts and emotions. Nami’s death hit him very hard and as a result we got to see man on the edge throughout the episode. The obvious thing to discuss with the episode is his bad ass moments but I was more entranced by his rage and desperation. Full Metal Panic always has a purpose with it’s fights and that extra layer sets it apart for other shows.
My Hero Academia followed up the epic fight with an episode of a much different tone and it was a great episode. Seeing our heroes families was quite fun (especially Bakugo’s Mom). It was great to see All Might realize that he needed to change gears with his life and fully embrace the mentor’s role. And of course the scene with Izuku’s mom was really well done. Overall a great episode.
Disappointments
Full Metal Panic Invisible Victory had a second recap last week. The season has been amazing so far- but after 8 episodes recaps aren’t needed.
Other Thoughts
The new season has begun and with it comes the scouting time for new seasonal anime. After week 1, there are some promising series. Some ones which I might stick with include Holmes in Kyoto, Cells at Work, and Chio’s School Road. Of course there are still more shows that I want to check out.
And yes, the platelets in Cells at Work are the most adorable thing that I have seen a long time.
I started watching Bang Dream and while it is nothing revolutionary, the story and characters are all quite enjoyable. It follows a formula that just works and works well.
Baka and Test is an amazing series. There is just something charming about watching this group of idiots bumble their way through their school lives. The absurd premise makes this series all the more hilarious. Glad that I received a recommendation to watch this series.
I also had the pleasure of seeing the film Fireworks at my local theater. The art style and aesthics were very cool and the story was entertaining. Not the best film out there but it was enjoyable.
That’s all I have for this week. What were your thoughts on the episodes from last couple of weeks? Did you have a favorite episode?
