Greetings! This blog has made it to post number 200! It has been one hell of a ride to get to this point. It took a while for this blog to gain any sort of traction, there have been numerous revamps, and many failures and successes along the way. I feel like this blog has really grown and found it’s stride especially in the last year or so and certainly in the last 100 posts. This has been because of all of the support of the ani-blogging community. It has been great to have you all read and support this blog. I never thought that I would reach 100 posts and here we are at double that number. My community of followers is relatively small but it is one full of awesome people. Thank you to all of you who have welcomed me into the community, not overly judged me for my opinions, and helped me to discover some great anime over the years. Thank you all!
As a form of thanks, I wanted to hear from the readers as to what you wanted to see for this special milestone. I conducted a poll too see what you all wanted to see. The majority of you who responded asked to me to a list of my 25 favorite Waifu Anime characters. I have been racking my brain for weeks on these picks as there are so many awesome characters out there. Now, though I feel like I have my list as of July 2018 of my 25 top girls in anime. I will be discussing briefly why these ladies made the list as well.
Since the selection process was difficult and I wanted to give a shoutout to some extra characters, here are a few Honorable Mentions. These girls just narrowly missed the cut…
And of course there may be a few spoilers in the post…you have been warned.
Zero-Two (Darling in the Franxx)
Tsuya Asui (My Hero Academia)
Nero Claudius “Saber” (Fate/Extra Last Encore)
Tessa Testarossa (Full Metal Panic Series)
Mayurii Shina (Steins;Gate)
And here is my list counting of favorite characters, counting down to Number 1..
25. Meteroa Osterrich (Re:Creators)
One of my more obscure choices since very few people watched this series when it aired. However as you will find by other entries in this list, I tend to really connect with the more intelligent characters of a show. Meteroa really fits the bill here. She was really the mastermind behind the plan to save the world and sometimes devising the plan is tougher than executing it. Add in a kind and soft spoken personality with some humor thrown it and you have a great character in Meteroa.
24. Moriko Morioka (Recovery of an MMO Junkie)
Who could not like this fun and awkward Elite NEET. I thought Moriko was one of the best parts of MMO Junkie. I can appreciate her desire to just walk away and not deal with people. I also lie that she didn’t do it out of bitterness towards people, it was more of an extension of her shy personality. Of course also being an gamer certainly earned Moriko brownie points in my book. Moriko is a prime example of how a down to earth character can be entertaining to watch.
23. Mako Mankanshoko (Kill la Kill)
Kill la Kill had a ton of memorable characters, so why Mako? Mako makes the list because she is a bundle of energy who is not afraid to speak her mind. Her upbeat nature always slashes the tension in any scene that she is in. She was also easily the funniest character in that entire series. Come on, how could you not like this character?
22. Narumi Momose (Wotakoi)
The newest character on this list, Narumi deserved a spot due to her quirky yet realistic personality. Her quirks are absolutely hilarious to watch. We all have to deal with the separation of real life and the things we love. We all have had moments where we try to hide who we are and Narumi isn’t any different. She has extreme moments of geekdom, but she is a functional member of society as well. It is cool to see representation such as with Narumi’s character. I think she is a well rounded and interesting character, that us why she made my list.
21. Lucy Heartfilia (Fairy Tail)
I will admit, I wasn’t a huge fan of Lucy at first. But as I delved further into Fairy Tail, my opinion of her as a character really changed. I respect her ability to tell it like it is especially toward other members of her team. She is a also a very kind and compassionate individual- all traits which are worthy of respect. She also has proven to be a pretty badass character especially later in the series. I do feel she is more than a fan service level character.
20. Taiga Aisaka (Toradora!)
Who didn’t enjoy watching this little fireball go back and forth from calm and sweet moments to kicking someone’s ass? Taiga is an iconic character for sure and one of the main reasons that I enjoyed Toradora! Taiga doesn’t take crap from anyone but underneath that rough surface is someone who is kind, fun, and sensitive. The best characters are the ones which can surprise you and Taiga certainly fits the bill perfectly. She more than deserves a spot on this list.
19. Rika Shiguma (Haganai)
This is girl is just funny as hell period. In a cast of insane characters, Rika was the one who stood out to me. The reason that I enjoyed watching her so much wad the fact that she is not afraid to be herself, she just runs with it especially when it comes to the adult rated material she enjoys so much. She goes over the top with everything she does and that is what makes her so great.
18. Ochako Uraraka (My Hero Academia)
Certainly my pick for best girl of MHA (don’t hate), Ochako has a fun and caring personality, a kick ass super power, and a great reason for wanting to achieve her dream of becoming a hero. Ochako is always that fun, upbeat presence that anyone would love to have in their lives. She is the type of character who would easily have your back. Ochako’ just has the type of personality which makes it easy for you to root for her. There needs to be more characters like her in anime.
17. Karen Tendo (Gamers!)
Karen has a real awkward charm about her, especially it comes to letting out her inner geek. Karen is a character that is easy to connect with because she puts up a facade like we all do. That facade is next to impossible to maintain and when it crumbles we see her true nature. She is like many people in the fact that she always worries about being good enough for the people around her. When she gets into geek mode, she is absolutely hilarious and it is hard not to root for her to succeed. She is a representative of many of us and that is always a pleasure to see.
16. Akatsuki (Log Horizon)
Akatsuki is a pint size ninja with attitude- an attitude which made her the star of Log Horizon. Her main strengths are her unquestionable loyalty and kindness. But she also doesn’t take any shit from anybody. For me that makes for an awesome combination traits to have. It is telling that instead of running away from her size, she embraces it. She also embraces her situation and her gaming persona, even when the gaming world becomes reality. Akatsuki is just a really fun character to watch and hopefully we will get to see more of her in the future.
15. Emilia (Re:Zero)
This perpetually kind and adorable individual easily had a spot on this list. While not my choice for best girl of her series, I still acknowledge how awesome she is as a character. Emilia doesn’t let hardships bother her at all, easily puts others ahead of herself, and also had the gumption to put Subaru in his place when he needed it the most. Despite being kind, she is also strong enough to take charge of any situation. She is a great character, period.
14. Rin Tohsaka (Fate/Stay Night)
Rin is a fan favorite for a reason- when she takes charge of a situation, she has almost no equal. While strong and intelligent, she also makes mistakes. Her hard work and determination are admirable, while her failings make her relate-able. She is over confident but has the ability to back it up. For me she is the type of character that I can certainly get behind.
13. Asuna Yuuki (Sword Art Online)
I know what some of you are thinking- how dare I put a character from the series which is the scourge of the anime community on my list? Well it is simply because that I believe that Asuna is an awesome character. Yes, she has some not so flattering moments, but when she takes charge, she takes charge. But besides that, she has shown to really have many humanizing moments as well. Asuna is an ultimate character in wish fulfillment but she also is character worthy of respect for her strength and kindness.
12. Kaname Chidori (Full Metal panic series)
Kaname is certainly one of those fascinating characters. Brazen and tough one moment, vulnerable the next. Kaname can make you both laugh and cry, sometimes within the matter of minutes. While Full Metal Panic is mainly Sousuke’s story, Kaname really brings most of the soul to the series. Kaname is fascinating because she why she has good reason to point out the flaws in others, she will also admit that she has made mistakes as well. She will never go down without a fight and will also have your back whenever the chips are down. Kaname is a great example of how a heroine should be written.
11. Celty Sturluson (Durarara!!)
Funny how things work- the characters that aren’t human tend to be the ones are in the fact the most human. Celty proves the statement true in spades. She is a surprisingly relate-able character. She falls in love, shows concern for others, and can certainly take care of herself. She also like so many on this list is a character who is not someone that you want to mess with. She also looks totally awesome on that bike as well- I will admit it. Celty is an example of the fantastic character writing that you can find in anime.
10. Yoko Littner (Gurren Lagann)
Yoko is on the list not because of her outfit choices. She is on the list for her strength, loyalty, and kindness towards those around her. She is certainly rough around the edges but that roughness is part of her charm. She is always able to take charge of a situation when needed and is a bad ass with a rifle. However, that roughness also comes with a bit of sass and a dose of wisdom and kindness. You can be a tough survivor but also have a bit of heart and Yoko proves that.
9.Rem (Re:Zero)
Yep, two girls from Re:Zero made it on the list, a blasphemous act I know. But hey both characters are amazing. Rem proved herself to be an amazing character throughout Re;Zero. Her loyalty to Subaru was almost god-like, she accepted Subaru’s choice of Emilia over her, and she put her at risk to save others on multiple occasions. She is also kind to a fault. Let’s not forget that her battle prowess is also insane as well. She is an amazing character and you would be a fool to not support her (and Emilia too).
8. Hifumi Takimoto (New Game!)
Sometimes, it’s the shy and awkward ones that are the best characters to watch. Hifumi is certainly that and it is those traits that are so endearing. Despite being shy, Hifumi is also a really kind individual. Hifumi struggles with things that come easy to some people, but she is also willing to change and try to improve herself. Despite her fears, she challenges herself by removing herself from her comfort zone. She is also a bit of geek herself which also gets brownie points with me. There is really not anything you can hate about her character.
7. Megumin (Konosuba)
One word…Explosion!!! I think that best sums why Megumin makes my top 10 characters. A chunni with an explosion obsession and a bit of an attitude, Megumin is a top notch character in a franchise full of such characters. Her delusions and stubbornness are a source of great humor even with the trouble she causes others. I respect Megumin because she doesn’t let anyone deter her from doing her thing and being a fun individual.
6. Holo (Spice & Wolf)
Holo certainly earns the moniker ‘The Wise Wolf” as she has the brains the get her out of just about any situation. Yes, she does get some help but Lawrence on her journey, but said journey would not proceed in many cases without Holo’s contributions. I respect how she doesn’t need anyone to save her. And despite all that, she is still willing to learn more about the world during her travels. Smart, strong and a bit of tease, Holo is one anime’s greatest characters.
5. Haruhi Suzumiya (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)
Haruhi just refuses to accept the world the way it is and wishes for something more. She also is not afraid to break the rules to enjoy life the way she wants to. For me, she represents that whimsical portion of all of us who really refuses to grow up and accept the dull state of the world. She wishes to grab hold of the adventure called life and experience it to it’s fullest. To an extent, I wish I could be a little more like Haruhi and that is why she made this list- I respect her ability to strive to make the most out of life.
4. Kurisu Makise (Steins; Gate)
Super genius, tsundere, and perfect foil for the protagonist Okabe. Kurisu is the type of character which we need to see more of in movies and television. She is Okabe’s driving force and she has a presence which is certainly felt and missed. I’ll admit my backround in science is part of the reason that she is one of my top characters, you don;t get to see an amazing scientist character too often. And while that is part of it, her personality is what really fascinates about her character. She is smart and confident but yet she is not really cold towards others and even tries her hand at a bit of awward humor from time to time. Kurisu certainly deserves a spot on this list.
3. Erza Scarlet (Fairy Tail)
A strong, kind, and somewhat crazy individual Erza is one of the most entertaining characters to watch in my opinion. She is someone you can count on to save the day, pick you up when you are down, and remind you when you are doing something stupid. Her strength as a character and as a wizard instill fear in others just by presence and that is something that is really cool. She pulls off a lot of insanely awesome moves and it is awesome to see her in battle. Despite that though, she cares deeply about those whose are close to her. Erza is a really easy character to root for and was a lock for this list.
2. Mikoto Misaka (A Certain Magical Index/A Certain Scientific Railgun)
Bit surprised that she is not number 1 right? Well the Railgun of Tokiwadai and namesake for the blog sits in the number 2 spot on my list. Mikoto has one of the most badass abilities of any character in anime, is more than willing to face a problem head on and is not afraid to step into danger. She has an incredibly amount of confidence, a character trait that I can respect. However, that strength is usually used to help others more than herself and the respect that has from her friends is well earned. Mikoto is a character who is a bit underappreciated in my opinion and hopefully with more content from the universe coming soon, she can gain more of a fan base.
And the number one character is…
Drum Roll Please…
Altria Pendragon “Saber” (Fate Franchise)
Saber was one of the first anime heroines that I was exposed to, and the impression that this character has left has stuck with me to this day. Loyal with a strong sense of morals and the skills to back up her confidence in battle. She is bound by a sense of duty to whoever she is fighting for. What sets her apart from other characters in my mind is that Saber’s main purpose in fighting is tied to regret. We all have regrets and Saber wears them on her sleeve something that many people won’t do. Saber also will do things that any good friend would do, support you when you are down and scold you when you do something stupid. She is concerned first and foremost with doing the right thing. Saber also has a strong presence whenever she is on screen. It is for these reasons that Saber commands the number 1 spot on my list.
So there you have it, my list of my picks for the top 25 girls in anime. Admittedly beyond the top 10, the list was incredibly difficult to compile as there were so many great characters to choose from. Hopefully you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it.
I wanted to conclude this post by saying once again- thank you. Thank you to everyone who has ever taken the time to read even one of my posts. Thank you to all of my long time supporters and subscribers. Thank you to the anime creators for giving me something that is worth writing about. And finally, thank you to the anime community for welcoming a nerd like me into it. It has been an amazing ride up to this point, and hopefully the next 200 posts will be as fun as the first 200. Until, next time, this is Railgunfan75 signing off- stay geeky my friends!
Congratulations on the 200 posts and thanks for sharing your favourite anime girls with us.
Thank you, it was my pleasure to do so. And thanks for your continued support, it is much appreciated!
“Bit surprised that she is not number 1 right?”
Yeah! But then I saw who you picked for number 1, and it was all so clear…
Congratulations on 200 posts!
Thanks a lot! Thank you for being a supporter of the blog! It is much appreciated. The funny thing one was that my Number 1 pick was probably my easiest pick for the entire list.
