Steins; Gate continues to go strong as we progress to the part of the plot that we all were waiting for. Okabe finally decides to fight once again and the consequences (while entertaining) are not surprising given the nature of the series. I loved how they have had Mayuri really come into her own in recent episodes and be the catalyst that springs Okabe into action. Yes, Mayuri fulfilled the role previously, but this time it is different. She became more than just the one to be saved and I think that was a nice change. The email that sent to Okabe was so damn heartbreaking- the feels train was real on that for sure. The climax of this series has been well worth the wait and the build up from the earlier episodes.
Chio’s School Road continues to be comedic gold. Chio’s seems to special in taking average scenarios and taking them to the extreme but not so far that the scenarios are stupid. I really enjoyed the bathroom story in episode 5. The elaborate means that she needs to take to not get caught were just mind blowing. I also had a great time with the bridge sequence in episode 6. I honestly have gotten the most laughs when Chio nerds out after playing too many games. The sequence also confirms that both Chio and Manana are both not great people which honestly is a nice change. They both can be mean and selfish which is fun to watch.
Cells at Work continues to be an amazing series. I thought their mini story arc involving cancer was incredibly well done. It took some skill to approach the cancer story the way that they did and I give kudos to the staff on that one. It was a grounded story in a series which has proven to be very over the top. The other episode had some great moments for Red Blood Cell- it was great to see her succeed. It was also nice to see the conversation between White and Red Blood Cell towards the end of that episode.
I will say that I was not upset with the filler episode of My Hero Academia this last week. The episode was a lot of fun and I thought adding in a prequel of sorts to the movie is a nice touch. As for the current arc itself- I have quite enjoyed it up to this point. I like how they are making the point to remind the students (and us) that hero work is more than just punching bad guys. It is a nice touch for sure.
Finally, I had the chance to see The Night is Short, Walk on Girl in theaters and that was certainly a treat. It was funny and completely absurd. It was also way better than expected. The movie had great characters and a plot which really flowed together in an organic way despite it’s absurd events. It was great that they managed to give even the supporting characters their due by the end of the film. It is quite hard to do in a film. Also, the animation was very very cool. I am really hoping for a blu-ray release on this one.
There were no disappointments this week!
I am actually curious to check out the original legend of the Galactic Heroes after finishing the new series. I may not have talked about it much on this blog, but it was actually a pretty solid series.
I am also excited that the My Hero Academia Movie is coming to a theater actually close to where I live. I am certainly excited for the end of September and already have my ticket bought!
