Perfect Blue (Dub)
I had the opportunity to catch a film which came a lot of praise this week in theaters. Perfect Blue came to a nearby theater for a limited engagement and it was worth the price of admission. I loved how captivating the story was with it’s twists and turns. I also thought the animation was superb and the way the scenes were presented was incredibly well done. I am a fan of a nice cerebral type story and this movie really fit the bill. I loved how they didn’t really spoon feed things to you. I am a bit sad that the film is out of print at the moment.
Steins; Gate 0 returned this week with one hell of an episode. I certainly did not expect it to take place in the future nor did I expect how much I was going to be blown away by the events in the episode. Even as Okabe pointed out in the episode, it is hard to comprehend how bad things would get unless you see them yourself and the audience got to see first hand just how bad things could get. It was a gut retching episode and it was great to see Okabe further his resolve even more. It sucked to see Okabe really realize that his choices were wrong, he thought he was doing the right thing though sadly sometimes that is not enough. I’m really excited to see what happens next (I will be watching the episode after publishing this post).
FLCL returned once more with the premiere if it’s third season and wow was the opening episode amazing. It amazes me that a series can change it’s setting and it’s characters around, have a different feel but yet still feel the same. I think this new cast of characters along with the return of Haruko will be a blast to watch. They have already done a great time of establishing unique personalities for each of the protagonists and the dynamic between is already entertaining after one episode. I also loved the fact that they changed the theme again this season. To me each season has tackled a different aspect of growing up and this season looks like it continues that trend. I am certainly glad that the series is back and am excited for the upcoming weeks.
Chio’s School Road continued with another fun as hell episode this week. I enjoy how they are not afraid to present a more mature yet childish type of comedy. What I mean by this is that the humor is really only appropriate for adults but at times it can be borderline dirty. This was certainly the case this week. The “butt duel” as it could be called was insanely absurd and a great example as to how do good visual gags. I also enjoyed the convenience store bit and how spot on that type of scenario is in terms of Chio’s motivations. I have said this before- Chio’s School Road makes me laugh out loud and do so in a way which I don’t care about how absurd everything is on the screen. A good comedy makes you forget about such things and we have one here.
Finally, Harukana Receive had another great episode with what will likely be the climax for the series. Yes, this series is a bit heavy on the fanservice side. However, it it also presents a great story. The match between Haruka, Kanata and the twins is as good as expected. I know many have said that the series isn’t perfect (which it isn’t) but I am have been entertained by it. Regardless of the outcome of the match, the final episodes are setting up to be great.
There were no disappointments this week.
As much as I love the sub version of Steins; Gate, I have to say that the dub is the way to watch this series. It is the best version hands down.
I haven’t talked much about Asobi Asobase but that series is so insane and hilarious at the same time. Don’t be fooled by the art style or the cute opening, this series is a fun and perverted. It is definitely worth watching.
Major 2nd is another solid series that I have been watching as I keep binging on sports anime. It does a nice job balancing the personal stories and the baseball. This series aired this year and I am bummed that I didn’t check it out earlier.
My Hero Academia had an interesting episode this week for sure. I think the next episode with the Deku/Bakugo fight will be better but still I have no complaints. The next few episodes will likely be wind down/setup episodes with only a few episode remaining int he season.
That concludes my thoughts for the week. What did you enjoy this week? Please comment below. Until next time, this is Railgunfan75 signing off. See you soon and stay geeky my friends!
