Greetings! Railgunfan75 here with my weekly blog post. It is a day late but as you as usual life stopped me from posting on time. This week was the final stand for my weekly summer shows (I still have a few summer shows that I want to finish) and I am sad to see these shows go. However, I am excited for the new shows this season as well. So let’s not delay any further- here is the list from last week.
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai Ep. 2
A Certain Magical Index III Ep. 1 and 2
Sword Art Online Alicization Ep. 2
Fairy Tail Ep. 279
Goblin Slayer Ep. 2
RErideD Ep. 6
Chio’s School Road Ep. 12
Violet Evergarden Special Episode
FLCL Alternative Ep. 6
SSSS Gridman Ep. 2
My Hero Academia Ep. 63
A Certain Magical Index Ep. 1-3
Steins;Gate 0 Ep. 23
Double Decker Ep. 3
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Senpai continued strong with a great 2nd episode. I love the dynamic between Sakuta and Mai. They sarcastic quips between the two of the them are very hilarious to watch. Along the way we are also treated to a really interesting and emotional narrative. The series is doing a great job of balancing the character development and progressing the narrative. Many series are typically still in the introductory phase at episode 2 but we are right in the middle of the story by this point. It also helps that this series has amazing aesthetics as well. I am on board with many others who are saying this is a contender for anime of the season.
Chio’s School Road aired it’s dub finale this week and wow was the episode funny as hell. The story with Yuki and her home habits was a lot of fun. It was a fun commentary about how we never really know people. It also gave us another example how two faced Manana can be ( I mean that in a funny way, she is an hilarious character). I also really enjoyed the end credits scene and the blooper reel. I really enjoy when series are a bit of self aware and can poke fun at themselves. I have to give kudos to the dub cast- they all put on hilarious performances.
Of course I was excited for the return of A Certain Magical Index III. I was so glad to see that both Crunchyroll and Funimation secured the license for the series. I am anxiously awaiting the simuldub next week. which will likely be the way I will watch the series going forward. I did decide to preview the first few episodes of the sub and I will say that that they were quite entertaining to watch. I loved how they improved the animation- the series looks great. The arc is actually pretty interesting so far as well.
And we also got the final episode of FLCL Alternative this past week and I really enjoyed the episode. It was a fitting ending to the FLCL story. The episode was crazy, weird, and brought home the message of the narrative. I appreciated the ending where the status quo of our group of characters was forever changed with the acknowledgement that life must change and move forward. Sadly people come and go from our lives and the episode did a great job of bringing the point across.
It was also great to see Violet Evergarden return with a special episode. The story was another beautiful and emotional story. Violet Evergarden is one of the best anime that 2018 has to offer and the episode was amazing to watch. The themes of the episode especially fit what Violet was going through and what she had to come to terms with. I also have to say that again the voice cast did another superb job. Great episode!
SSSS Gridman looks like it is going to be a fun series. Awesome to see some of the burning questions questions answered in episode 2. This series certainly has the feel and style of a Studio Trigger show. can’t compare this to the live action series since I have never watched the original. But, this is a cool and fun concept. Even if this is a monster of the week type show, the character dynamics between our main cast are doing great so far and the show is really bombastic with it’s battles. I am really excited about this series.
The only disappointment this week was that I couldn’t watch more anime!
I did decide that giving myself a refresher for the original Index series was in order after watching the first couple episodes. I wasn’t lost when watching those but I realized that it been a long time since I watched the original series. It has been a fun ride and I forgot how entertaining the opening story arc for the series was.
And this week ends a great run of watching Steins;Gate 0. I loved the experience of watching the dub (the sub was great too). There is something special with this cast and the way all of their performances play off of each other. The events and story of Steins;Gate 0 lend themselves much better to a dub in my opinion. I am going to miss this series.
The same goes for My Hero Academia as well. Looks like I will be reading the manga to fill the void until season 4.
